hey

i dont understand about DRI on my ibook G4 as ive never set it up before. could someone answer me these questions?

firstly, once i have configured my kernel, got framebuffer working etc can i just compile xorg-server with dri use flag, radeon, INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse" and do Xorg -configure then edit the driver to radeon and make sure dri is enabled, would that work? I just want to ask that, because I have already tried once with xorg-6.8.2, X worked and glxgears worked, but it said dri was disabled?

2.) do i have to do eselect opengl set radeon or whatever?

reading the modular-x migration guide is a bit confusing, do i have to use xorg-x11 or xorg-server? i was lead to believe it doesnt actually matter? xorg-server is minimal and xorg-x11 is full?

the graphics chipset is a M11 NV [FireGL Monility T2e] (Rev 80)

EDIT:

is it possible / better to use binary drivers?

--

thanks for any suggestions and help :)

Yep, pretty much just follow this: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#xorg but, make sure you're using Xorgautoconfig-0.2.4-r1 and that you've built xorg-server with VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" and dri enabled.

firstly i tried Xorg -configure, got a nice x session up, but i couldnt check if direct rendering was actually working and in the logs i think it is

Code:
glxinfo | grep rendering
glxinfo command not found

maybe i got the command wrong? or what do i need to emerge to get the command back?? (i went for minimal install with xorg-server) if not how do i check if i have direct rendering? - emerge an opengl app and see if it works? :P

-

i tried Xorgautoconfig and it complains about not being able to find required modules "bitmap" and "pcidata" do i need to change the modules path? or shall i just not bother and use the xorg.conf i have made?

cheers

Like I said, you need to be using Xorgautoconfig-0.2.4-r1. If you're not, you need to sync and update.

As for the AIGLX crud, you *cannot* use the binary drivers, they're x86 binaries, you've got no chance of making them work on PPC. Just follow the guide in the FAQ and it should work. :)

oh was using 0.2.3 ok will let u know.

EDIT:

ok it says DRI is enabled, but i still get AIGLX crud in log file, does it matter? but it does say reverting to software rendering after...

how can i check if i have direct rendering or not? glxinfo command not found - what package do i need to emerge?
surely not nvidia-glx as im using ATI ?

thanks for your help :)

Well, it sounds like you don't have mesa-progs installed. Did you have the dri flag enabled and VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" before emerging xorg-server? If you changed the flags did you emerge world -Duv --newuse to update all of the packages with those use flags? Did you emerge ati-drivers? If you did, please unmerge them.

cheers mesa-progs sorted it. yeah the use flags are enabled and i compiled xorg-server with them. i didnt emerge ati-drivers.

glxgears is running like a dog

Code:
direct rendering: No
openGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect

Code:
libGL warning: 3D Driver returned no fbconfigs
libGL error: InitDriver failed
libGL error: reverting to slow indirect rendering

why is it using mesa???

:(

Mesa is what it's *supposed* to be using. The DRM drivers are Mesa OpenGL drivers. Which kernel are you using? You might want to try 2.6.17, I think you get that error with old kernel DRM drivers. Do you have xf86-video-ati emerged?

xf86-video-ati *is* the radeon driver. If you don't already have it emerged, that might be why. Are you sure you had VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" and dri enabled when you emerged xorg-server?

Yes (that's what the xf86 stands for in xf86-video-ati) :).

Well, depends on a lot of things, but it could be okay. Try emerging "tomatoes". If that runs okay (it's an OpenGL game) then you're fine. :)

ok cheers.

im compiling gdm and fluxbox atm, will try it later

:)

also just added

Code:
Section "dri"
mode 0666
EndSection

Doubled the FPS :|

the above was already there, but it is case sensitive... "dri" not "DRI"

EDIT

the mesa ati driver doesnt perform very well anyway does it? i take it you have the same setup as me?
