I am at step 6.b in the ppc manual I emerged an update to portage and got to thinking before I emerge more I better update gcc to 4.1.1.
Is step 6.b is the best step to do this?
Are all the steps in the gcc upgrade guide for new installs correct for ppc?
Example: Do I type verbatem
Code:
gcc-config i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.5
?

Nope as it says in the guide:

(Please substitute "i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.5" with the GCC
version and CHOST settings you've upgraded to:)

But there's an easier way. Once you've emerged the new gcc, type:
Code:
eselect compiler list

This will show all of the installed GCC versions. Find the number next to the version that you've just installed (4.1.1 probably) and then type:
Code:
eselect compiler X
with the number instead of X.

So if it looked like the one below, I would type eselect compiler 2
Code:

Available compilers for CTARGET powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu
  [1]   powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu-3.4.6/vanilla
  [2]   powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu-4.1.1/vanilla

Make sure that you've sync'd first:
Code:
emerge --sync

I did it saturday.
If i write:
emerge -uav gcc
I can't do anything.

If I write

emerge -p gcc it finds gcc 4.1 with the R near (replace??)

EDIT: maybe I solved.... maybe when i tried to emerge portage it automatically downloaded gcc 4.1. Now I'm tryng to configure it.

The R means that you've already installed it.
