hecking whether powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu-gcc -mtune=G3 -mcpu=G pe -freorder-blocks -O2 supports -mabi=ibmlongdouble... no
configure: error: this configuration requires -mlong-double-128 xtended format support

!!! ERROR: sys-libs/glibc-2.4-r3 failed.
Call stack:
ebuild.sh, line 1539: Called dyn_compile
ebuild.sh, line 939: Called src_compile
glibc-2.4-r3.ebuild, line 1179: Called toolchain-glibc_src_c e
glibc-2.4-r3.ebuild, line 251: Called glibc_do_configure 'np
glibc-2.4-r3.ebuild, line 941: Called die

!!! failed to configure glibc

Note I have had my CFLAGS="-03 -pipe -mcpu=750" As make.conf.example said it should to be. then I switched as recomended in this post to
Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -mtune=G3 -mcpu=G3 -pipe"

Should I add
Code:
-mlong-double-128    xtended
to make.conf?

After emerging gcc-4.1.1, you need to change your compiler to gcc-4.1.1, glibc won't compile without it. I've explained how to do this here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-480766.html

That worked!
Note: However this is the last package of step 1
Code:
emerge -uav gcc
of the gcc upgrade guide.
Selecting the new gcc is not done until step 2.
Can a new install user tell emerge to update gcc but stop at glibc then select the gcc, env-update and continue the glibc emrege?
How about a all in one unatended command for bonus points?

I ran into the same problem and solved it as explained in many dup threads,-) - however I did not remove the -mlong-double-128 USE-flag from my make.defaults.
Now my previously working WLAN-configuration (yes, I finally managed to get my BCM4306 working by using a real wireless router instead of my interim bridge-solution) stopped working and I get firmware-errors although I did not change anything.
So I wonder if it maybe has to do with this extra-long-format I introduced by upgrading to gcc-4.1.1...?

that would have taken me a while to figure out... thanks a lot for the quick help (again:) - will try this tomorrow.
Except for this, the 4.1.1-upgrade went quite smoothly, great work!

[Update] Downgraded to udev (I really like the new portage with speedboost btw...!:) and everything works fine, thanks again! Using bcmwl5.sys now (works with wplsta.o too).
