I have some gentoo experience..

I just installed a new system, 2006.0, 2.6.x kernel, emerged some stuff, everything went fine
it's a tyan thunder le-t, intel pIII 800MHz,
chost is i686-pc-linux-gnu
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

I just compiled a new kernel today with the latest (stable for x86) gentoo-sources: i think 2.6.16-gentoo-r12 (can't check but 99% sure)
(no idea if the problem is the kernel or something else)

i first had this problem when i followed the guide to make this new system a local gentoo rsync mirror. i edited the conf files , but when i did:
/etc/init.d/rsyncd start, i got something like this:

Quote:

Dependency info is missing!

Please run
# /sbin/depscan.sh

i can't even do "init 6" for example, it can't find /var/lib/init.d/deptree

i got him to reboot, and it still boots fine, but it can't start any services like eth0, sshd,... so i can't connect to it (or post logs), but basically every thing he want's to run doesnt work, because it can't find the dependency info.

Oh and offcourse, i tried running the script, it completes very fast without showing any output, and after that, everything is still the same :?

And i have no idea what might have caused it, basically i just had been doing some normal things, like emerging some stuff (apache, mysql, yafc, irssi, samba), configuring the rsync daemon and trying a new kernel

I'm getting the same error messages for each initscript that gets executed at default runlevel.

Currently emerge'ing -evD system to see if that solves the problem

I can't emerge anything, because eth0 is one of the many things that couldn't be started :?

edit: i scanned the hard disk, it's failing, i guess we have found the problem now

I had this same problem and tried pretty much everything discussed in these posts, and more:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-469951-highlight-dependency+missing.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-469524-highlight-dependency+missing.html

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-446705-highlight-dependency+missing.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-448500-highlight-dependency+missing.html

In the end I booted off the LiveCD to emerge -e baselayout, which emerged fine, but did not help -- I was still getting errors when trying to depscan.sh -u. Then I removed /var/lib/init.d/deptree and /var/lib/init.d/depcache, but the same error popped up when trying to depscan.sh -u. Then I copied /bin/mktemp from the LiveCD to /bin/mktemp on my system and ran depscan.sh -u and it worked fine with no errors and I was then able to boot into my system after that.
