I just finished with the basic installation of Gentoo on my iBook, it is now time to install packages but when I try to mount the cdrom it says that I need to specify the filesystem type. I did not see this in the Install Document. All it says is:

mount /mnt/cdrom

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you have support compiled into your kernel for your ide chipset, cdrom and the iso9660 (whatever it's called) cdrom filesystem. That's the kind of response you get if you haven't got the right filesystem support generally.

I don't know. How do I check it out? If it is wrong, what would I have to do to recompile the kernel after it's already compiled and installed?

make sure you try the right device (check dmesg for where your cdrom can be found) and then try mounting it with: mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom (change /dev/cdrom if dmesg says your cdrom uses another device).

dmesg /dev/hdc returned messages that were too long to read but it said something about usb drivers.
I wasn't sure if that was the correct syntax or not.

Tried (mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom) and it worked so I'm happy for now. Thank you for your help.
