Yaboot starts booting the kernel from /dev/hda4, then reports that /dev/hda4 is not a valid root block device and it wants me to specify a new RBD or kick me out into the shell. My partitions are layed out as follows:

Code:

        #                    type name                  length   base      ( size )  system
/dev/hda1     Apple_partition_map Apple                     63 @ 1         ( 31.5k)  Partition map
/dev/hda2         Apple_Bootstrap bootstrap               1600 @ 64        (800.0k)  NewWorld bootblock
/dev/hda3         Apple_UNIX_SVR2 swap                 2097152 @ 1664      (  1.0G)  Linux swap
/dev/hda4         Apple_UNIX_SVR2 linux              193272752 @ 2098816   ( 92.2G)  Linux native

Here's my yaboot.conf

Code:

boot=/dev/hda2
device=hd:
partition=4
root=/dev/hda4
delay=10
timeout=40
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot
image=/boot/kernel-genkernel-ppc-2.6.17-gentoo-r4.JackS
initrd=/boot/initramfs-genkernel-ppc-2.6.17-gentoo-r4.JackS
label=linux
read-only

Here's my fstab:
Code:

/dev/hda4               /               ext3            noatime         0 1
/dev/hda3               none            swap            sw              0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0      /mnt/cdrom      iso9660         noauto,ro       0 0

proc                    /proc           proc            defaults        0 0

shm                     /dev/shm        tmpfs           nodev,nosuid,noexec     0 0

What am I doing wrong?
Is it that my root device is too big to boot from or perhaps that it's too far back on the drive? If that's the case, I could split /dev/hda3 into a boot partition and swap.

Thank you! :)

What's the exact error you're getting?

Here's the exact message:

Code:

>>Determining root device...
!! Block device /dev/hda4 is not a valid root device
!! The root block device is unspecified or not detected
Please specify a device to boot or "shell" for a shell...
boot() ::

Okay, I see your problem now. :p You're using genkernel, but you didn't fix the yaboot.conf as directed in the handbook. With genkernel, you need to specify the root as the ramdisk and append real_root with your actual root (it pivots). Take a look at the handbook for an example.

I had to scrap Gentoo on the Mac in favor of Leopard WWDC preview ;) ...but thanks for that. I'll be trying it again at some point.

Sorry for offtopic. But where did you download it (Leopard). I didn't find any links on the site of Apple. Or you have some kind of developrt subscription?
