I had sound working on an update to kde-3.5, then I had sound distortion, I used quickpkg to backup arts kdebase and re-emerged alsa-lib alsa-utils etc, removed all kde stuff including kdemultimedia.

I then re-installed the binary packages and everything was working fine until I emerged kdemultimedia, after which I had the distortion back. Fortunately an emerge -Ca kdemultimedia and a reboot has removed the problem. However, I like the little speaker icon that kmix provides in the kdemultimedia package.

Any ideas what causes this and how to resolve it?

Try not using arts. Arts has always been buggy.

I'm unable to get sound at all in kde unless I use arts, I tried that. However I did emerge kdemultimedia using USE="-arts", is that what you mean?

After emerging kdemultimedia and launching kmix from a shell I no longer get the speaker icon in the systray that I used to..puzzled.

Have you compiled KDE without USE=arts and configured KDE not to use arts and still got no sound?

I recommend working on getting KDE to work without arts instead of trying to fix arts, but that's up to you.

I would rather not use arts, but I've found that unless I compile KDE with arts it presents me with no options under control settings for sound and multimedia.

I've solved the sound distortion,
Code:
USE="-arts" emerge kdemultimedia
and sound returns.

For some reason I can't get the speaker icon back into the systray.
