Anyone using Qemu on their PPC?

I am trying to boot off a XP cd install to install it onto a 4Gb qcaw image, but at present not getting very far.

Code:
powerbook echo6 # qemu-system-ppc -hda winxp.img -cdrom /dev/hdc -boot d -m 256
invalid/unsupported opcode: 3e - 07 - 02 (fa33c08e) 0x00100000 1

Yes, but you must use qemu command to emulate an x86. With qemu-system-ppc command you emulate a PPC system, not an x86!

Code:
qemu -hda winxp.img -cdrom /dev/hdc -boot d -m 256

Yes, I tried that also, the cd starts up but then after a short while nothing more happens.

How long is 'after a short while'? Remember that qemu emulates another system and even an other cpu that the one your system has. So it will be far slower than a real system, and a good deal slower than vmware would be for example.

For myself, I have yet to successfully run i586 emulated on my PPC with qemu. Only certain i386 binaries from RedHat seem to work under qemu userspace, and many i586 binaries encounter unsupport cpu instructions.

I am pretty sure that XP is compiled for i586, and so I doubt that you would ever get anything newer tha Windows 3.1 working under qemu on PPC, even if emulation of an x86 system was support.

Summary: qemu is the wrong app to try to emulate a full x86 system under Linux/non-x86.

Yes, but I'm restricted to only Qemu on the ppc platform?

See: http://bochs.sourceforge.net/.

It may be your only hope for emulating an x86 system on Linux/PPC. And it is terribly inefficient (not that x86 itself is in anyway an efficient ISA).
