I am having problems starting X after upgrading (profile, toolchain, xorg, kernel) my Windtunnel G4. I've been following the forums, but nothing seems to help. Here is the xorg.conf that Xorgautoconfig produces:

... X starts but everything is scrambled. When I hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, X stops but now the vts are all scrambled and I have to reboot.

What I find suprising is that my Xorg.0.log doesn't seem to notice anything out of the ordinary:

I assume you emerged your xorg-server with "radeon" included within the VIDEO_CARDS variable. I am also assuming that X.org used to work fine for you, and now is broken.

Personally, I use:

Try the following:

  1. set the option to disable acceleration and comment-out modules dri, glx, glcore, disable page-flipping
  2. comment-out the sync ranges for the monitor
  3. try one or more of these lines:
    Code:

    Option "DynamicClocks"        "0"
    Option "DDCMode"                "1"

  4. change the available resolutions under "Screen" to
    Code:

    "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

  5. kill X, find kernel the modules 'drm' and 'radeon', unload the modules, verify

    # /etc/init.d/xdm stop
    # killall X X11 Xorg xdm gdm kdm
    # modprobe -l '*drm*'
    # modprobe -l '*radeon*'
    # rmmod radeon
    # rmmod drm
    # lsmod | grep drm
    # lsmod | grep radeon

    Then rename the driver files to extension .ko.old . Restart X (perhaps try rebooting also). If these modules are compiled-in to your kernel, then recompile kernel with them as modules and perform the above steps.
    To check if module/compiled-in:

  6. Perhaps try playing with a few of the configs I use for my PowerBook (be sure to disable MergedFB lines). Their module selection / load order might be an improvement, but I think it is unlikely to be of much use.

Hmm.... I doubt your video card supports 20 GHz operation! Your best bet is to disable DRM in both xorg and the kernel, use a standard mode much less than 1600x1200, comment-out all monitor sync/mode settings, and work your way back to your current config, observing what changes do/do not break Xorg.

Also, if you have a VGA output on your card use that instead of the DVI output. That should not be an issue on your card (your card is well supported last I knew), but I know that for my own card (9600 Mobility M10) the DVI output doesn't work correctly.

It may be a while before I get the time to work on this some more, but I wanted to thank you for all your help on this, and other threads.

Also would you say this is a problem with the current radeon driver?

@rsala : You're welcome. Yes, it is probably an issue with the radeon driver, but I am surprised considering that you have an older card. There should be a way to fix it, but you may have to do it by trial-and-error.

I also just noticed:

Try adding:

        Option "AGPMode"       "1"
        Option "DisplayPriority"        "HIGH"

and change the mode to your AGP speed (x1, x2, x4, x8 ), which is likely to be x2 for your model, but look it up first!

EDIT : priority to HIGH could help

Basically, the radeon driver is detecting an x86 video BIOS that doesn't exist, and so bogus values are picked for the clock timing and other radeon settings. Please try the patch mentioned in that thread and see if it helps.
