Hi. I'm using the following:

Albook/Powerbook G4 15.2'' w/ radeon driver, M10 video card (9600 Mobility).

I have an external LCD which supports a native resolution (wide) of 1440x900, connected to my powerbook's VGA output (DVI port w/ VGA adapter of course). The dual-display with 1440x900 on the external LCD works fine with Windows XP w/ a cheap Intel graphics card.

I found the EDID modelines for each display and specified them manually. This way, if I happen to enable IgnoreEDID (I have tried both settings), my internal display will still setup correctly.

However, I cannot get X11 to attempt the 1440x900 resolution. It doesn't even attempt to validate it ---- the log file shows validations for CRT2 resolutions starting with 1280x1024 and lower. Strangely, sometimes 1280x1024 passes validation; sometimes fails. But 1440x900 never shows up at all.

I want to run in MergedFB mode with 1280x854-1440x900. X shows the EDID for 1440x900 in the logs :

After testing with Mac OS X (Panther), the external display works just fine at:


  • 60 or 75 Hz
  • res. of: 1440x900, 1360x768, 1280x1024, 1280x960, 1280x800


Also, I have seen many references to xmode -x .... -y .... on the Internet for computing mode lines. Is this available in Portage?

I guess that I should note that I have an old 21'' CRT with max. resolution of 1600x1200. It works correctly at any resolution with this configuration if I remove the Modeline entries and freq. ranges from the second monitor. In fact, this is the first monitor of 5 to not init correctly over VGA/CRT output with this laptop; searching over google shows this to be a common issue when using a 1440x900 LCD display with the radeon driver, and that an explicit ModeLine is known to correct the issue, supposedly.

Solved! The fix for this is pretty simple. The non-4:3 aspect resolutions have to be used in Xinerama mode with an explicit ModeLine. The MergedFB (the hack it is) mode cannot detect it as a valid mode and ignored ModeLine.

Of course, Xinerama never worked with radeon on my machine, for Xorg 6.8, 6.9, .... But at some point with 7.1 it's working now.

So, modifying the preceding config to a standard Xinerama configuration in the "ServerLayout" section solves it.
