Hi all,

This is my first post, so I hope it is a fruitful one.

I would like to install Gentoo on my iBook G3 Clamshell, its only 300Mhz so I understand it will take probably a week to actually compile. This is also my first attempt at using Gentoo, though I am familiar with linux systems, and using the command line.

But that isn't the problem. Being so old the CD-Rom drive cannot actually read CD-R discs, hence the only thing I can install is Ubuntu because they make pressed CD's.

The perfomance hit is a little great with Ubuntu, as this machine only has 300Mhz to utilize.

I was thinking of installing Gentoo via my network, but not sure where to start. Would I be able to do a netbook (I think the ibook can do this), have all the initial install files moved across to the iBook. Then reboot the iBook with the basic install, and continue compiling the rest?

Or would the iBook have to be netbooted, then just start compiling to end up as a finished system in one session?

I would prefer the first one as it would mean only having to leave my iBook running, rather than keeping my desktop running too.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Ciaran

PS. The machine does have Ubuntu on it. Could I install Gentoo from within Ubuntu, then erase Ubuntu?

I can't remember if this machine likes the Ubuntu Live CD's, would that help as either?

I've found this website

http://www.macgeekery.com/hacks/how_to_install_debian_via_network_boot_from_a_mac

Can anyone provide with more gentoo specific instructions?

ubuntu's cds now boot into gnome.

So instead of installing ubuntu, boot the cd, bring up a command line, and then install gentoo with that (along with the gentoo handbook of course).
