I don't post too much, but I've been curious what everyone's take is on the state of pcc linux as a whole. Ubuntu seems to be seriously discussing dropping PPC support (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=298746), and perhaps Fedora as well (http://lwn.net/Articles/211152/). Will gentoo be diverting attention elsewhere as well? With so many macs that can't run the latest Mac OS, it's a little disconcerting that many distros want to leave what could possibly be the newest largest growing architecture for linux. Thoughts?

Gentoo/PPC isn't going anywhere. :p There's still plenty of PowerPC hardware running linux and new avenues that the PPC team doesn't really even address, such as embedded PowerPC systems. Heck, *every* single gaming console is PowerPC this time around with Cell/PS3 supporting PowerPC linux out of the box! If the PS3 only sells one quarter of the systems the PS2 sold, there will be 25 *million* more potential PowerPC/Linux boxes available. :) Sure, Apple not producing new machines lowers the visibility of the platform, but there are still plenty of interesting things to work on. As long as there are a few Gentoo/PPC devs, the port will still be viable.

Although statistics can be made to say anything, http://spaceparanoids.org/gentoo/gpnl/stats.php?q=arch shows that PPC is the second most supported architecture on keywords in ebuilds alone.

As JoseJX said, with the PS3 coming out, there will be many more people using the arch.

As someone stated in the Ubuntu thread, I wonder how much of the decision has to do with the lack of proprietary driver and plugin support. It would be a real shame if both Fedora and Ubuntu both decided to drop PPC. The idea of the distro becoming "community maintained" doesn't sit too well with me as that may just fade away. Good to know that Gentoo PPC isn't going anywhere.

Cell/PS3 will be a new arch cell-ppc or will be integrated in ppc64 arch (adding new CFLAGS or USE parameters) ?

I doubt Redhat/Fedora will drop PPC. They would loose their biggest client: IBM!

"Distributions available
Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for POWER
SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server (SLES) for POWER"

Originally, the quote in question on the Fedora Wiki page did mention PPC but was later changed to x86-64, so who knows.
