I'm having difficulties installing Gentoo 2006.0 Universal PPC32 onto my Power Macintosh 7600/132. 2006.1 LiveCD wouldn't even boot, would get stuck on the screen before the penguin would show up in the top right, but 2006.0 LiveCD boots so I'll use that.

At boot it says it couldn't auto recognise the ethernet card (and it does work under Mac OS) and I'm not sure what kernel module to load to make it work.

Also I'm having problems partitioning the drive because under /dev/ there is no sda/sdb or hda/hdb for that matter. This computer has two hard drives on the internal SCSI bus and seems to recognise them at boot up.

Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

I think the ethernet module for that machine is mace. The missing driver for scsi disks is sd_mod (I think, it's been some time since I've looked at it). If not, feel free to post the list of modules loaded and I'll let you know which one is missing.

If you don't feel like trying that, the 2005.1 livecd should work on that machine, or come on IRC and ask Pylon for a 2006.1 CD that boots on OW machines.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips.

mace got the ethernet working but loading sd_mod doesnt work, the following error comes up:

Code:

livecd / # modprobe sd_mod
SCSI device sda: 8925000 512-byte hdwr sectors (4570 MB)
SCSI device sda: drive cache: write back
SCSI device sda: 8925000 512-byte hdwr sectors (4570 MB)
SCSI device sda: drive cache: write back
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 2
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 3
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 4
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 5
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 6
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 7
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 0
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1
  unable to read partition table
sd 0:0:0:0 Attached scsi disk sda
SCSI device sdb: 1660299 512-byte hdwr sectors (850 MB)
SCSI device sdb: drive cache: write back
SCSI device sdb: 1660299 512-byte hdwr sectors (850 MB)
SCSI device sdb: drive cache: write back
sd 0:0:1:0 Attached scsi disk sdb

Then when I try mac-fdisk:
Code:

livecd / # mac-fdisk /dev/sda
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1024
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1025
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1026
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1027
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1028
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1029
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1030
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1031
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1024
Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 1025
mac-fdisk: Can't read block 0 from file (Input/output error)
/dev/sda
Command (? for help):

And if I give a command it just comes out with the Buffer I/O error
Same goes for sdb

Well, like I said, you'll have much better luck with either 2005.1 or the updated 2006.1 that uses 2.6.18 (which doesn't have the OW booting bug that 2.6.17 has).
