i've got a bad problem i cannot really solve

i've got an ibook g4 13" and gentoo on it
i used the handbook guide to compile the kernel
but alsaconf doesn't find any soundcard
and lspci sometimes outputs out an "Unknown device" and sometimes doesn't even see it

mobprobe loads me all the SND modules, but when i run alsaconf or alsamixer or any sound utility, it gives me error and modprobe unloads all SND modules (added by defaults and boot)

how do i come out of this? i've really looked after lots of handbooks, guides but nothing changed since 2 weeks

alsaconf does not work on i2c devices, and since it's an i2c device, it does not show up in lspci. Follow the FAQ, compile in all ALSA components, but do not compile in the dmasound driver since that is the OSS one.

Yes, I meant the FAQ in my signature. You misunderstood about i2c. The program alsaconf does not work with i2c devices. ALSA does support i2c devices. If you follow the FAQ it will work, I've personally set up iBooks this way.

So it is normal that alsaconf does not detect your device and that lspci does not list it. It's not a PCI device so it doesn't show up in either of those programs.

As it says in the FAQ, do not use modules. Compile in the sound components exactly as described in the FAQ and it should work fine.

Did you mean the part where it says "(or configure as modules and ensure they're loaded on boot)"?

Well, I didn't explain *explicitly* how to do that in the FAQ :p
If you don't know how to setup the modules correctly, it's much easier to just compile everything in.

For what it's worth, this is what I have in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6:
snd_aoa
snd_aoa_soundbus
snd_aoa_i2sbus
snd_aoa_fabric_layout

And while the sound card in use lsmod shows:
Code:
snd_pcm_oss            68168  0
snd_mixer_oss          28072  1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq_dummy           7164  0
snd_seq_oss            58728  0
snd_seq_midi_event     11608  1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq                87944  5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_seq_device         13632  3 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
snd_aoa_codec_onyx     21128  2
snd_aoa_fabric_layout    19040  1
snd_aoa_i2sbus         31572  1
snd_pcm               123904  2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_aoa_i2sbus
snd_page_alloc         15528  1 snd_pcm
snd_timer              36192  2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd_aoa_soundbus       11236  2 snd_aoa_fabric_layout,snd_aoa_i2sbus
snd_aoa                28496  2 snd_aoa_codec_onyx,snd_aoa_fabric_layout
snd                    90304  13 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_aoa_codec_onyx,snd_aoa_fabric_layout,snd_aoa_i2sbus,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_aoa
