!!! ERROR: app-text/gnome-spell-1.0.7-r1 failed.
Call stack:
ebuild.sh, line 1546: Called dyn_compile
ebuild.sh, line 937: Called src_compile
ebuild.sh, line 1255: Called gnome2_src_compile
gnome2.eclass, line 64: Called die

!!! compile failure
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.

I've noticed this for a lot of packages and they all have this in the terminal:

/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so: undefined reference to `cairo_pdf_surface_create'
/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so: undefined reference to `cairo_pdf_surface_create_for_stream'
/usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so: undefined reference to `cairo_pdf_surface_set_size'

this is also present:
/usr/lib/gcc/powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu/4.1.1/../../../../powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu/bin/ld: warning: libssl.so.0.9.7, needed by /usr/lib/libgnomevfs-2.so, may conflict with libssl.so.0.9.8
/usr/lib/gcc/powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu/4.1.1/../../../../powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu/bin/ld: warning: libcrypto.so.0.9.7, needed by /usr/lib/libgnomevfs-2.so, may conflict with libcrypto.so.0.9.8

looks like your gnome installation (or what you have of it) just got b0rked. emerge gentoolkit and see if "revdep-rebuild --package-names" helps you.

Code:
emerge gentoolkit
revdep-rebuild
Edit: sonicbhoc was faster ;-)

I can't check right now, but i ran revdep-rebuild -pv last night and it didn't list anything that I can recall.

Is the cairo undefined part of gnome as well?

isn´t this because of not enabling X and pdf use for cairo ?

I emerged Cairo with the pdf flag and that fixed it. I am having another problem. Thunderbird emerged successfully but when I try to run it this happens:

No running windows found
thunderbird-bin exited with non-zero status (1)

If I were you I'd just compile thunderbird. All that says is that it crashed, but it doesn't say why. If you compiled it maybe it would work? did you try running revdep-rebuild again to see if thunderbird-bin is missing deps?
