I plan upgrade to gcc-4.1.1-r1 on a fresh installation from stage3-ppc64-64ul-2006.1, using the 2006.1 profile.
I run:
emerge sync
emerge =gcc-4.1.1-r1

The results ist: sys-devel/gcc-4.1.1-r1 ( masked by: profile)

Any Ideas. Gracias.

Which profile are you using?

ls -la /etc/make.profile

Well, it is masked by the profile (see the file packages in that directory). You might want to simply switch your profile to /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/ppc/ppc64/2006.1/64bit-userland-gcc4 instead. Take a look at the upgrading guide for more info on switching your profile: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-upgrading.xml

That said, I do not know if there is a reason why gcc4 isn't default on ppc64, I do not have one of those machines. You may want to ask in #gentoo-ppc64 on IRC before making the change.

Did you ask the ppc64 team *why* it's not standard yet? Perhaps there are issues...

tgall decided to create a new profile for gcc 4, because the CFLAGS in power3 and power4 profiles broke gcc 4 on those 'subarchs' (to be specific -mcpu=power3 and -mcpu=power4 are broken: gcc does not bootstrap). that's the reason the 64bit-userland-gcc4 profile was introduced.

I want to build some experimental stages using that profile so you don't have to do the manual twisting with gcc versions after unpacking the stage, but haven't found the time yet... :?
