The new VLC emerged fine, but refuses to start. It outputs this:

Code:
stmiller@stmiller ~ $ vlc
VLC media player 0.8.6 Janus
[00000067] main interface error: no interface module matched "hotkeys, none"
[00000067] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "hotkeys, none" initialization failed
[00000068] main interface error: no interface module matched "screensaver, none"
[00000068] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "screensaver, none" initialization failed
[00000069] main interface error: no interface module matched "any"
[00000069] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "(null)" initialization failed
stmiller@stmiller ~ $

Anyone have any clues? :(

Portage 2.1.1-r2 (default-linux/ppc/ppc64/2006.1/32bit-userland, gcc-4.1.1, glibc-2.4-r4, 2.6.18-gentoo-r3 ppc64)
=================================================================
System uname: 2.6.18-gentoo-r3 ppc64 PPC970FX, altivec supported

On ppc we also have a problem apparently:
Code:
fbissey@lagrange ~ $ vlc
VLC media player 0.8.6 Janus
[00000019] main private error: no services_discovery module matched "hal"
[00000017] main playlist error: no suitable services discovery module
[00000020] main interface error: no interface module matched "wxwidgets, none"
[00000020] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "wxwidgets, none" initialization failed
[00000021] main interface error: no interface module matched "xosd, none"
[00000021] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "xosd, none" initialization failed
[00000022] main interface error: no interface module matched "hotkeys, none"
[00000022] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "hotkeys, none" initialization failed
[00000024] main interface error: no interface module matched "wxwidgets"
[00000024] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "(null)" initialization failed

Now of course this is in ~arch so we should report problems. Removing my preferences
folder .vlc from previous install reduced the errors but didn't allow it to run
Code:
 fbissey@lagrange ~ $ rm -rf .vlc/
fbissey@lagrange ~ $ vlc
VLC media player 0.8.6 Janus
[00000019] main interface error: no interface module matched "hotkeys, none"
[00000019] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "hotkeys, none" initialization failed
[00000021] main interface error: no interface module matched "any"
[00000021] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "(null)" initialization failed
No idea at the moment apart checking on bugzilla and reporting if nothing show up.

$ vlc
VLC media player 0.8.6 Janus

[00000134] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "hotkeys, none" initialization failed
[00000137] main interface error: no interface module matched "any"
[00000137] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[00000001] main private error: interface "(null)" initialization failed

Hi!
(time was really up to register here :) )
If you add -fPIC to the CFLAGS it should work (at least this worked here)

Here's the bug report:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=157746

Apparently, unmerging vlc before emerging vlc works.

Indeed it works. I should have tried that.

It seems that I've got the same problem here: After 0.8.6 update, vlc found no more interfaces (httpd, ncurses, wxwidgets - nothing), vlc -l didn't found them (but vlc-config --list modules did). I'm now running emerge -C vlc; emerge --sync; emerge vlc...

emerge -C vlc; emerge vlc fixed it here.
