Youtube fans rejoice. The new vlc 0.8.6 can play the .flv flash video format!

I downloaded the .flv file with a nifty bookmark from here for Firefox
http://1024k.de/bookmarklets/video-bookmarklets.html

And simply opened that file in the new VLC.

There is a vlc mozilla plugin. I need to enable the use flag and test that now so it will [maybe] play from the browser.

Now time to catch up on some funny video clips...

[Edit: I DO have gnash installed. Otherwise those flash video pages complain that your browser has no flash, and may redirect you.]

Does it need the latest ffmpeg (which I have for shorten support) or is it purely
from vlc?

I think you should mentionned those things, otherwise some people could be
disappointed

That's the latest one in portage. Support in vlc may have trickled down from it.

I enabled the nsplugin USE flag for vlc and it handles 26 MIME types, including Quicktime and Windows Media, but not x-shockwave-flash.

It's still very useful, and thanks for pointing it out, btw, but it looks like the plugin doesn't support flash yet. Perhaps this will be added soon?

http://fredrik.hubbe.net/plugger.html

Maybe this could be a possible solution to have flash video automagically played in VLC? I'll have to try it later.
