The Efika 5200B looks very impressive. So small. But with no CD drive, how do you install the OS? And can gentoo be installed via a network boot of some kind?

Both netboot and USB boots are supported. It's not too hard to build your own Gentoo NFS root, but the Release Engineering team is working on releasing a more "out of the box" install method, which should be available soonish. The Gentoo-wiki also has some interesting notes on installation at the moment: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Efika

I setup a bootp and tftp server on my Linux server and booted it off the network. It was a pretty smotth install. I used
efika for gentoo. check it out! Microdrives din't seem to work. I used an ata to cfdisk adapter, got a microdrive from computer geeks,
but the drive does not work well with the current driver. I tried modifying the kernel for PIO access, drive still timedout. So I bought an 80GB
laptop drive and it's been great! I'm working on a usb to i2c bridge for it now. Pretty soon I will be able to interface sonar sensors and motor control. Good luck!

Hi,

I have successfully managed to get tftp and NFS work with precompiled kernel and root FS. However I am not able to build functional kernel by myself. I have tried to use crossdev and efika layout including efika-kernel but the kernel wont start. Smartfirmware manages to load my kernel but no printouts from the kernel when it should be starting up.

Code:

ok boot efika/zImage.elf console=ttyPSC0 ip=dhcp panic=3 root=/dev/nfs nfsroot=192.168.0.10:/srv/nfsroot/efika

Network Parameters:
Network config string: "dhcp"
IP-addr     = 0.0.0.0
Netmask     = 0.0.0.0
TFTP Server = 0.0.0.0
Gateway     = 0.0.0.0
Filename    = efika/zImage.elf console=ttyPSC0 ip=dhcp panic=3 root=/dev/nfs nfsroot=192.168.0.10:/srv/nfsroot/efika
Boot path: /builtin@F0000000/ethernet@F0003000:  Boot args: efika/zImage.elf
Timeout 500ms waiting for BOOTP/DHCP packetOKNetwork config mode: DHCP
IP-addr     = 192.168.0.133
Netmask     = 255.255.255.0
TFTP Server = 192.168.0.10
Gateway     = 192.168.0.1
DNS         = 192.168.0.10
Filename    = 'efika/zImage.elf console=ttyPSC0 ip=dhcp panic=3 root=/dev/nfs nfsroot=192.168.0.10:/srv/nfsroot/efika'
TFTP efika/zImage.elf /

Could you tell how exactly I should build the kernel?

Start with a config from a working kernel, (try /proc/config.gz from a kernel that boots or http://dev.gentoo.org/~agaffney/ppc/efika/config_efika ) and then customize that to suit your needs. Hopefully that will fix your problem. :)

I just noticed that I am missing also following printouts:

Code:

zImage starting: loaded at 0x00400000 (sp: 0x017ffe90)
Allocating 0x443588 bytes for kernel ...
OF version = 'EFIKA5K2,1.3'
gunzipping (0x1800000 <- 0x409000:0x5e8dce)...done 0x421a54 bytes
OF stdout device is: /failsafe
command line: console=ttyPSC0 ip=dhcp panic=3 root=/dev/nfs nfsroot=192.168.0.10:/srv/nfsroot/efika
memory layout at init:
  alloc_bottom : 01c48000
  alloc_top    : 30000000
  alloc_top_hi : f000c000
  rmo_top      : 30000000
  ram_top      : f000c000
Looking for displays
instantiating rtas at 0x07ffb000 ... done
copying OF device tree ...
Building dt strings...
Building dt structure...
Device tree strings 0x01c49000 -> 0x01c4969d
Device tree struct  0x01c4a000 -> 0x01c4c000
Calling quiesce ...
returning from prom_init
Using Efika machine description
Only using first contiguous memory region<5>

I am guessing that those are printed by OpenFirmware so in that case it might be problem with kernel image and OF. I am not actually sure which binary I should give to OF to boot. It seems that pre-build kernel_efika is elf so I assumed that zImage.elf produced by Linux make would be the one to load.

I quess that is not the case?
