Hi there,

I have just taken a look at http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-pow-gnu-vacpp.html?ca=dgr-lnxw02LinuxPOWERForGCC

I took a look in dev-lang and didn't see a name that would suggest that this product is in portage. Does anyone know if it already is, or what the chances are of someone adding XLC to portage in the near future? It may be of interest to legacy MAC and PS3 developers.

Thank you for your time,
Frank Russo

I think it costs money. But I'm not 100% sure.

Edit:
Yeah it's not free:

IBM XL C/C ++ Advanced Edition for Linux Authorized User License + SW Maintenance 12 Months (D54KXLL)

IBM price excluding tax:
499.00

Well, it wouldn't be the first commercial product in Portage (cf. VMware Workstation), but having used the beast, I think the interested audience for xlC would be slightly smaller than the number of bicycling circus bears entered in the next Tour de France. Present company excluded. :)

IME most commercial products with a decent installer will work--after appropriate PATH tweaking and such--when installed to their own directory under /opt. At various times, I've done this with VMware Server, JBuilder, Eclipse, IBM's DB2/UDB client kit, Google Earth and many others.

Managing packages through Portage is always the preferred route, but lack of an ebuild doesn't force you to wait for one or write your own. At US$500 per license, the best hope for an ebuild is for some Gentooers within IBM to take an interest.
