Hi!

Has anybody managed to get Gentoo work on a Synology Disk Station? Its a NAS device where you can install a IDE/SATA disk, with a Freescale MPC 8241 (200-266 MHz) and 32-128MB Ram, GBit Ethernet and USB 2.0. Parts of the hardware are similar to the Kuro Box, others not. Prices in Germany start from 150 EUR. Here some information I found so far:

Information about the boxes:
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/?option=com_content&task=view&id=27251&pop=1&page=0&Itemid=75

Hardware:
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/DS101/HardwareList

Port from Slimserver:
http://www.synology.com/enu/support/help-page.php?q_id=349

Port from NSLU2-Linux:
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/DS101/HomePage
http://oinkzwurgl.org/diskstation

Enable Telnet:
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/DS101/EnableTelnet

I'm not an expert in hacking boxes like that... but if you get telnet access, I think you can install gentoo the same way as on the kuro box:
http://www.kurobox.com/mwiki/index.php/Gentoo_on_the_Kurobox

But the hardware is not exactly the same, so you cannot use kuro box packages. Does someone know of a project about installing Gentoo on a Synology Disk Station?

Is anybody interested in setting up such a project if not already exists?

AFAIK Gentoo PPC will not work with less than 64 MB Ram, right? But is 64MB enough? The 128MB version is difficult to obtain...

Best regards
Andreas

PS: Perhaps someone has the GPL Source already? http://www.synology.com/enu/gpl/index.php

64MB is tight but doable, I would compile the packages for it on another machine if possible though. Since there is already a linux port available, it shouldn't be too much of a problem to get it booting, you just have to get creative. Really, the only differences between a normal install and any odd embedded install is the initial boot and setting up the boot loader. The Gentoo/Embedded team provides 2006.1 stage3 uclibc stages which are much more lightweight than the regular ones. If you have a specific question, we can probably help you out.

I know this post is one year old, but I am currently writing a tutorial to install Gentoo on the ds107.

Hi ded!

First of all: Thanks for your great tutorial on installing Gentoo on the NAS, it worked for me like a charm. I now have a working gentoo under my fingertips, but actually ran into several problems w/ emerging programs. Did you manage to install libstdc++-v3 for instance? I get this error

Code:
error: cannot
convert `const __ctype_touplow_t*' to `const int*' in assignment

I guess it has something to do with using uclibc instead of gcc. Do you (or anyone els reading this) know if there is a chance of getting this compiled?

I haven't installed libstdc++ yet on my nas, so I cannot help you. But I see a few hits on google... Good luck !
