Because you just know you want to impress your friends with lots of animated special effects in your window manager. Not to mention it provides many useful features, in addition to the gratuitous eye-catching special effects like making closed windows disappear in a burst of multi-colored fire and smoke.

The earlier versions could be built on ppc with some fiddling, but it's now in portage and officially tagged. If you have 3D hardware acceleration working you might want to try it out.

I've tried it, following a few guides from gentoo-wiki.com, but I found it to be unbearably slow on my iBook G4 with an ATI 9200 video card. Perhaps I'm also doing something wrong? The image becomes blueish after I load beryl-manager, which is weird, because I think I have experimented with it a few months ago and it ran sort of OK.

sort of works here on an ibook G4, 12inch, 1.2Ghz with a Radeon 9200. I had to tweak xorg.conf (the main thing is to not use exa). You need xorg-server-1.1.1-r3 which fixes the color problems. All the eye candy stuff works - the rotating cube seems smoother than what I see in OSX while switching users. But scrolling is painfully slow (especially painful in firefox but it's also noticeable in xterm) so I'm not going to use it on a daily basis for now. maybe just to impress friends ;) But the eye candy really is impressive.
