Good morning, good evening, wherever you may be--across the country, around the world...

I recently decided to reinstall Gentoo on my PowerBook Titanium (G4 / 7410). I followed the X Server Configuration HOWTO and also the Migrating to Modular X HOWTO (although as I said, fresh install so no migration from 6.x). My attempts to set up xorg.conf correctly did not work out. When I tried Xorgautoconfig I received errors on attempting startx (which executes "exec startkde") similar to those found here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-498127.html. The solution for the user there doesn't seem to be a solution for me (no r128 in my USE flags or in VIDEO_CARDS). In any event, this is the error I receive when I attempt to start X as well as my emerge --info:

Code:

I just noticed the startkde not found problem, but I think it's unrelated to the X problem. Anyway, if anyone has an idea as to what I need to do to get X to play nicely (or if you want to see /var/log/Xorg.0.log or any other configuration files or log files) please let me know.

Thanks very much. These forums are the best.

Well, the r128 error is because you probably didn't set r128 in the variable VIDEO_CARDS in make.conf.

Just add this to make.conf:
Code:

VIDEO_CARDS="r128"

And then re-emerge xorg-server:
Code:

emerge xorg-server -Dv --newuse

As for why X isn't starting, it looks like startkde doesn't exist. First, I would try removing that from your .xinitrc. Since nothing is starting, X doesn't actually start. There should be a minimal environment already installed (twm + xterm) that you can test aside from KDE. If that works, we'll try to figure out why startkde isn't working.

JoseJX, first of all thank you for the prompt reply. I've consulted posts to which you've replied many times.

I followed your instructions and now have this output when I simply run "X":

Code:

X Window System Version 7.1.1
Release Date: 12 May 2006
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1
Build Operating System: UNKNOWN
Current Operating System: Linux eva-unit-02 2.6.18-gentoo-r3 #6 Tue Jan 16 01:03:35 EST 2007 ppc
Build Date: 16 January 2007

    xkb_symbols                 { include "pc(pc105)+us+compose(rwin)" };
    xkb_geometry                { include "pc(pc105)" };

The state of the display is that twm (in all its "deformed," etc. glory) doesn't appear to load completely. The cursor is visible and moveable, but it's just the "X" shape and there is just the black and white crosshatched background. Please advise on the next course of action. At least the r128 error is gone :).

Thanks.

Thanks! :)

Can you try adding xterm to your .xinitrc? xterm should definitely be installed, so this should start a basic terminal instead of just showing a cursor. Does this work?

That gives me an xterm in the upper left hand corner of the display (incidentally, the font size indicates that the resolution is being set correctly).

Okay, so X is working fine. We can rule that out as a problem. What if you tried startkde from within the xterm?

I resolved the little startkde issue (I actually had never emerged kdebase-startkde) and now startx brings me KDE in living color.

Thanks for the help!
