Hi. I'm a long time gentoo user.
I have a Powerbook 12" @ 1.5Ghz with Tiger, that imho is great but.. i miss gentoo.
On an x86 gentoo is the perfect OS for but on ppc, and in particular on a laptop, there were too much issues that blocked me to setup gentoo. Thiss is few months ago.
What i would know is: how many other problems afflicts gentoo ppc?

my pb mounts an nvidia 64mb video card. i don't need 3d but.. does suspend works? can i just close mi laptop and get suspend working, then reopen, touch the touchpad and have the login? xorg was able to understand that i closed the lcd turning off the light, but is the suspend fully supported?
is cpufreqd able to switch correctly the cpu speed when the laptop runs with battery and on AC?
why fans always runs? this on osx is quite difficult.
does xorg support the change of brightness of the LCD?
are there other known problems?

please, answer me: i would like to have gentoo on my laptop too but i don't wanna loose too much functions.
sorry for my terrible english. :)
thankyou.

PS: the search engine of the forum SUCKS!

No. This is due to nvidia not providing any specs on the video card. Since nobody knows how to wake these cards up, sleep isn't supported. (They can sleep just fine, you just can't wake them up.) This is unlikely to change in the near future. 3D support on the other hand is currently being worked on by the nouveau project: http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/

Yes.

The fans are controlled by the therm_adt74x driver. If you didn't add this driver to your kernel, the fans aren't controlled.

This should work.

Not really, besides the modem. The Airport Extreme driver is still being developed, but it's working well enough for casual use.

i know.. open drivers don't gain a sufficent wide range..

thank you very much for yout answers..

gentoo or osx.. that is the question.

I've got a powebook G4 12" like you and, It's works perfectly, except for the sleep (but you can use suspend2), the modem and flash (You need to use gnash). The Airport Extreme works fine but only at 11Mb/s quite enough to surf on the web.

The bluetooth works fine too.

hi. can you talk me more about suspend2?
I'm very interested to have gentoo on my powerbook, but it must work well.
I can live wit gnash, i think.
About the airport, don't you think that the range is shorter than macosx driver? i fear to must use the powerbook like a mutilated machine..

Suspend2 is a patchset for the kernel that does software suspend. This means that it backs up the memory to hard disk and then shuts off the machine, and restores during the machine boot sequence. You may have seen this before as this method is popular on Windows laptops. It's certainly not as fast as suspend to ram, but it works okay.

The Airport's range is smaller than the MacOSX driver, but it's really only a problem with 4318 cards. 4306 cards tend to work very similarly to OSX. Instructions for identifying your card are in the sticky post at the top of this forum.

If you have udev < 096, you need to install hotplug since udev 096 was the first version that handled firmware requests.

Can you tell us more about what's not working? Which driver are you using? Are there any messages in dmesg?

You should be using snd-aoa (and no other sound drivers). Make sure you're using snd-aoa and that the driver and all of the supporting components (fabric, layout, etc.) are loaded.

Well, to be fair, we did tell you that the 12" Powerbook wasn't supported as well as other models. Can you tell us what was wrong so we can fix it?
