hello,

is there any way to get some kind of virtual machine on macosx?
i would like to install gentoo on a virtual machine on macosx, so i can configure the gentoo stuff, while still working on macosx, untill the configuration is perfectly finished for a clean install.

Does somebody have an answer?

Thank you.

Hi!

Running a virtual machine will not let you configure Gentoo properly (for kernel stuff). If you use a virtual machine, the hardware is also virtual. The "real" hardware will be handled by OSX, and the virtual machine (for example, vmware), will emulate the hardware.

So, if you wanted to test out if Gentoo would handle your hardware fine, it will not work. You could resize your partition and create some for Gentoo (there are a lot of open threads for dual-boot OSX/Gentoo)...

this is a gread idea !

personally i installed virtualPC on macOSX-ppc G4 powerbook, then i installed gentoo on it.
It is a gread idea, framebuffer, netcard, are working well, so i'm able to test x86 specific code on a gentoo virtual machine sharing files with macOSX !!

i use the netword to share: i mean i use ftp, telnet, scp, ssh, ecc

great, easy, fast, cheap (except the cost of virtualPC, but students can have reduced price ;) )

p.s.
also you coukld try qemu, or other opensource virtualizator
(you can use macports to recompile them on macOSX)
