I use gentoo (gcc 4.1.1, glibc 1.2.10) on an iBook 14" (1.33 MHz 7447A, altivec
supported cpu).

I have a very annoying problem when running wpa_supplicant. My IP comes and
goes. It seems like dhcpcd keeps running and maybe flushes the ip once in a
while. It can be every second, or sometimes every 20 seconds. dhcpcd is
respawned somehow. The network is
simple, unencrypted, but I have had the same problem on a wpa encrypted
network. See below for an example on the weird behavior.

Thanks in advance! John.

I have just taken this default configuration from an example, don't know about
the last line.
$ cat /etc/conf.d/net |grep -v ^#
iface_eth0="dhcp"
modules=( "wpa_supplicant" )
config_eth1=( "dhcp" )
iwconfig_eth1="mode managed"
wpa_supplicant_eth1="-Dwext"
wpa_timeout_ath0=60

# cat /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
ap_scan=1

network={
ssid="SECRET"
key_mgmt=NONE
wep_tx_keyidx=0
priority=1
}

The network should be ok:
$ iwconfig eth1
eth1 IEEE 802.11b/g ESSID:"SECRET" Nickname:"Broadcom 4306"
Mode:Managed Frequency=2.422 GHz Access Point: <cut out>
Bit Rate:11 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Link Quality=100/100 Signal level=3/3 Noise level=193/100
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:26 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

Here, some pinging showing how the network comes and goes:

$ ping <ip>
64 bytes from <ip>: icmp_seq=78 ttl=53 time=615 ms
64 bytes from <ip>: icmp_seq=79 ttl=53 time=749 ms
64 bytes from <ip>: icmp_seq=80 ttl=53 time=701 ms
64 bytes from <ip>: icmp_seq=81 ttl=53 time=564 ms
ping: sendmsg: Network is unreachable
64 bytes from <ip>: icmp_seq=81 ttl=53 time=565 ms (DUP!)
ping: sendmsg: Network is unreachable
ping: sendmsg: Network is unreachable
ping: sendmsg: Network is unreachable

And the weird respawning of dhcpcd:

$ for I in $(seq 6); do (ps -A |grep dhcp || echo "no dhcpcd running") && sleep 9 ; done
27861 ? 00:00:00 dhcpcd
no dhcpcd running
no dhcpcd running
30092 ? 00:00:00 dhcpcd
no dhcpcd running
32310 ? 00:00:00 dhcpcd

Oops...

I have had this problem with all kernels. Now I use 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 and 2.6.18-gentoo-r3. dhcpcd is version 2.0.5.

If I do a loop to check the status of net.eth1 like in the example above with ps, I see that the process is actually stopping and starting all the time. I still have no clue on an explanation.

Thanks! John.

Try a v3 dhcpcd and see if that helps.

Hi I use 2.6.17-r4 and dhcpcd version 2.0.5-r1 and I had exactly the same problem. The way I managed to solve it is using kwifimanager: in the configuration editor add /sbin/dhclient in the line corresponding to the script to be executed on connect.

Cheers,

Flavio

I have upgraded to dhcpcd 3.0.10 but it doesn't solve the problem. I have kwifimanager installed but the configuration gui doesn't work (I guess because I don't have much of kde installed).

How do I, as suggested, make wpa_supplicant use dhclient in stead of dhcpcd? I can't find it in the configs.

Settings -> Configuration Editor
then you mark "Execute script on connect"
and add in the script line: /sbin/dhclient

Cheers,

Flavio.
