Hello everyone

i need your quick thinking minds and expertese again before I try to recompile a new kernel this weekend:

I have tried to compile a kernel in Gentoo more than a couple of times now, and I will have to again this weekend , so I need you advice regarding the compilation of modules after a build.

After each and everytime I have tried to find a list of the modules I have built by running the commands provided in the manual:
Code:
find /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r5/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko'

And everytime it returned nothing. I ran a list command on /lib/modules/ and found the 2.6.17-gentoo-r5 kernel. No sign of vmlinux, nor linux-2.6.17-gentoo-r5 for that matter.

In any case, even if I wasn to find a module by the name of "3c59x", or anything that resembled a Hex-binary name, I wouldn't really know if I would want ot automatically have it loaded at start up. The manual regarding this is just too thin.
So, I have just been skipping over this hoping to catch up with it later after installing a bootable kernel on this system.

Does anyone have any comments about why there are no modules that are found and in general about the autoload of modules, and what is beneficial for a powerpc G5?

Thanks a bunch!

You probably didn't do
Code:
# make modules_install

after compiling the kernel. I don't really understand the rest of your question, sorry.

Hi Jose

I followed the guides instructions and invoked the following commands while in the working directory /usr/src/linux:
Code:
make vmlinux && make modules_install

The kernel was compiled here and copied to /boot as linux-2.6.17-gentoo-r5, but the bootloader has a problem in locating this file so I also have a copy called Gentoo on /boot which the bootloader has no problems locating but launches into oblivion:
Code:
done.
found display   |   /ht@0,f0000000/ATY,SimoneParent@10/ATY,Simone_B@1, opening...

... a false output device. But I've found the solution to this problem when trying to launch a Debian image, and i will apply what I found to the Gentoo image in the next couple of days. If it works I will report it to this forum. I am just curious as to where the modules are housed and if not using them at launch will effect the kernels ability to boot. I don't think it will, but I have to ask.

sincerely

As you might have already guessed from looking at the code you were cutting-and-pasting:
Code:
find /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r5/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko'
the modules are located in
Code:
/lib/modules/

Are you really building 2.6.17-gentoo-r5, or did you just copy that from the handbook?
