Alright, I'm starting to wonder if I'm crazy.

I did a bit of research on different distros and decided on gentoo because I want access to every program painlessly and I want my system to be streamlined. Portage is an incredible system.

But, I've run into a snag. When compiling gnome on my G4 powerbook, one of the packages runs into an error. I wish I wasn't so new to this, so I could figure out and possibly correct whatever the error is. But I don't even know where to begin.

I guess I'm wondering how much of a performance hit I'll take if I just install the GRP for gnome. Or even, gasp!, switch to KDE.

I'm completely stuck, if anyone can give me any hope, I'd be grateful.

It was during the emerge of media-gfx/imagemagick-6.3.0.5
I'm curious if that's some unnecessary program. I don't do much image editing and I recall hearing about portage being able to skip things you don't want to both with. This is the end of build.log:
It was, I beileve, on a call to ld. "cannot find -lMagick
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status." Then, "make[1]: *** [blib/arch/auto/Image/Magick/Magick.so] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/media-gfx/imagemagick-6.3.0.5/work/ImageMagick-6.3.0/PerlMagick'
make: *** [all-perl] Error 2"

Call stack:
ebuild.sh, line 1614: Called dyn_compile
ebuild.sh, line 971: Called qa_call 'src_compile'
environment, line 3243: Called src_compile
imagemagick-6.3.0.5.ebuild, line 88: Called die

It looks like this bug:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=155804

Are you sure that you've sync'd?

If you have already, a quick workaround for this problem would be to edit make.conf, set MAKE_OPTS to -j1 and then emerge imagemagick. Once that's completed, you can then set it back to original setting and continue with your build. If you do need to do this with the current ebuild, could you please let us know?
