Hi,

I recently installed gentoo on my PowerBook G4 Alu 15". It runs quite well except that I havent been able to set up the soundcard yet.

I use kernel-2.6.19-gentoo-r5 with in-kernel alsa. I activated the following modules:
Code:
CONFIG_SND=m
CONFIG_SND_TIMER=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM=m
CONFIG_SND_SUPPORT_OLD_API=y
CONFIG_SND_VERBOSE_PROCFS=y
CONFIG_SND_AOA=m
CONFIG_SND_AOA_FABRIC_LAYOUT=m
CONFIG_SND_AOA_ONYX=m
CONFIG_SND_AOA_TAS=m
CONFIG_SND_AOA_TOONIE=m
CONFIG_SND_AOA_SOUNDBUS=m
CONFIG_SND_AOA_SOUNDBUS_I2S=m

All snd-options not listed are "Not Activated"

After loading the modules snd-aoa-i2sbus and snd-aoa-fabric-layout I can use alsamixer to set the volume. Anyway, if I try to run speaker-test or opening the sound device with arts I get the following error:

Quote:
Playback open error: -38,Function not implemented

I also tried portage-alsa and all the other modules like snd-powermac as well. snd-aoa-fabric-layout is the only one that enables at least alsamixer.
Probably its an alsa configuration issue since I have called alsa-conf quite often. I noticed that /etc/init.d/alsasound restart still tries to load the module snd-powermac. How do I can completely reset the alsa configuration?

Can anyone help me to get sound out this box?

Unless you have a compelling reason to use modules, please set up your kernel as shown in the PPC FAQ and build in the sound card drivers:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#alsa

You will want the snd-aoa driver. Fix this and if that works, we'll fix the alsasound init script. :)

OK. I got everything compiled in now.

Still the same issues. Alsamixer works. Playback no.

Same error message as above.

Post the whole sound section from your kernel config (not just the stuff you've turned on).

What device is alsamixer adjusting?
Maybe try turning this off:
CONFIG_SND_SEQ_DUMMY=y

This is just a dummy client for the midi synthesizer. I don't really need this one but it also hasn't any influence to this problem.

The device I can control with alsamixer is named "SoundByLayout". Is this the name it should be?

Solved it!

I was missing the "System V IPC" under "General setup".

Thanks!
