My problem is very similar to this post. I have a 24" LCD that I'm trying to set X to operate at its native resolution (1900x1200). However It seems to insist on using 640x480 no matter what I do. It also seems that MergedFB is being applied, for what reason I do not know. I think I may need to disable the CRT monitor it is detecting somehow (which there is none). I've tried using xac to generate an xorg.conf, but it fails with this error:

Thanks for reporting the xac bug. I'll get that fixed asap, would you mind testing for me once I have a patch?

To fix your current problem, simply add this to the device section of your config:

Option  "MergedFB"      "False"


xac already includes this workaround :p, but what's happening is that the radeon driver is detecting a second head on your card and choosing to use that instead of the main one. The above option stops it from doing that.

I thought I tried disabling MergedFB before, but I'll give it a shot when I get to work tomorrow. The computer on which I'm having trouble with X is a PowerMac G5 (ppc64/32ul). The video card is an ATI Radeon 9600 MAC edition, the ones that have 1 ADC connector & 1 DVI connector. I'm using the DVI connector for my display and have nothing attatched to the ADC. I'm pretty sure the ADC is DVI based, so I'm not sure where its detecting what seems to be a VGA connector.

As for testing xac, I'm more than willing to help out :)

Well, since it's a G5, you may also be running into this issue:

When BIOS connector informations aren't available, use this
option to reverse the mapping of the 2 main DDC ports. Use this
if the X serve obviously detects the wrong display for each con-
nector. This is typically needed on the Radeon 9600 cards bun-
dled with Apple G5s. The default is off.


You may want to try setting this on.

Disabling MergedFB had no effect on the fixed resolution issue. However, after setting ReverseDDC, I can set my monitor to 1920x1200.

Also I am seeing a "vertical window blinds" effect across my screen. It looks like the screen has been cut into vertical strips and then the strips placed halfway over eachother. The end result looks like chopped up letters and icons, the colors are correct and there are no solid/black white areas which might indicate more serious errors. This was also the case when I wasn't using ReverseDDC. I would take a screenshot of the problem, but it makes text and icons unreadable (so its hard see what I'm doing).

How about adding Option UseFBDev "True" (or false).

Problem solved! Adding UseFBDev fixed the problem. Does this affect direct rendering?

Okay then, thanks! I'll so ahead and set this topic to [SOLVED], but let me know when there's a patch for xac so I can go and test it out.
