I tried for 2 weeks to see if anyone got one of these laptops working with Linux, couldn't find anything on the net, and just took my as far as I know, this is the only howto for this particular model of laptop currently available. I mean, its only been on the market a couple of weeks.

I bought one of these walmart $800 laptops not knowing if it was compatible with Linux or not. Anyways, everything so far is working great with linux (A few untested hardware including express card, modem, and s-video out, but sound, nvidia geforce go 6150 video, aiglx, sata, and broadcom wireless are working great with minor configuration to the broadcom wireless using ndiswrapper and a driver I found works)

One note about broadcom wireless, read many different howtos about this particular model, and non of them worked...but my tinkering got me working using 64 bit drivers from HP (SP34152) and ndiswrapper...documented well on my web site.

Here are my notes and howto - everything from vista crashing for no reason during the first 2 hours of ownership, and crashing again after installing all updates, to my dissatisfaction with vista (all all previous versions of windows), to shrinking the ntfs partition using the built-in shrink virtual disk manager in vista, to installing sabayon linux 3.26 x64 from dvd to free space, to modifying sabayon linux for my own needs.

Before I get toasted about sabayon linux post here, I want you to understand that I only use sabayon to quickly get a gentoo distribution installed and working, then I highly customize the installation, including changing chosts it is more a gentoo system when completed than sabayon. People don't complain when I post fix to problems here about sabayon that are also specific to gentoo, so hopefully no one will complain about this howto link being posted here.

Hope you enjoy the howto and grab one of these laptops, they look good and so far work great with linux without breaking the budget.
