Hi everyone!

I have gentoo booting on my computer, but when I tried to emerge a desktop environment from the Packages CD I was surprised to see that nothing will be built because of missing keywords and masking of certian elements.

As per the manual I was careful not to configure USE prior to using portage to install the prebuilt binaries from the Packages CD. But from what I've read around the other forums and from dokumentation, masking is an issue for unstable packages. Is this to say that a gnome desktop is deemed to be unstable, or untested on a PPC64 system? 8O

Any help out here on this topic?

Sincerely,

Gustav IV

I'm fairly certain that when the Packages CD was made, the Mozilla family of applications was failing on ppc64 and as such, gnome could not be compiled (since it depends on Moz). If you sync and use the current portage tree, gnome is now marked ppc64 stable.

Thank Jose

I ran "emerge --sync" and then "emerge portage" and when I again tried to install the gnome GPR package from the CD-rom then everything set off as it should. But after 4 plus hours, (is that right?? should it really take that long??)
I got this message:

Code:

Now I am utterly baffled by this. :?

Could you please advise me as to how to get a desktop environment implemented on Gentoo, and if it really takes more than four hours to compile the prebuilt binary from the Packages CD? What happened to all that previously compiled can it be saved or retrieved, why did it die and can it be revived?

thanks in advance,

Gustav IV

If you have emerge sync'd, you cannot use the package CD. It's taking so long because you're compiling from source. If you want binaries, wait for the new release (2007.0 is coming out soon).

It looks like it's failing due to broken headers, try updating your system first with:
Code:

emerge world -Duv
