PostPosted: Wed Mar 07, 2007 12:46 am    Post subject: Oldworld G3 Mac and X Reply with quote

Unfortunately when I ran yellowdog I did not backup my xorg.conf. However, I did managed to make it work with yellowdog, which used an older verison of X.

I am currently using the latest stable everything, xorg 7.1, I have atyfb support compiled, and with the exception of a bug with slightly funky console text, it works nicely. I'm using Gentoo sources, my .config is here http://pohl.ececs.uc.edu/~adam/.config

I am using a really really crappy monitor that did not come with the G3, it came with an early apple model. However, I did managed to make it run in 16-bit or 24-bit (I cannot remember which) in yellowdog linux at 640x480. Xorgautoconfig supposedly creates custom modelines. However, X tells me that there are screens, just none are usable.

Here is my error log:

could it be that my monitor is just that sucky? I'm considering buying a G3 or G4 monitor from a guy on craigslist.

That doesn't look like the whole log, can you paste in the whole log?

Have you tried xac yet? It's my replacement for Xorgautoconfig and it can do a better job sometimes. I would also be interested in seeing the output of Xorgautoconfig --dump. Some early apple monitors require 15 bit color, with a specific modeline (they're fixed frequency monitors) so this may be an option too. More details about the monitor in question would also be helpful.

Clearly, mach64 is not a module or even a driver. I changed that to say "ati", and here's my log for Xorg.

mach64 is the correct driver, why did you say that it wasn't? ati is just a wrapper driver that starts the correct driver (mach64, r128, radeon). I still need more information about the monitor. What kind of monitor is it exactly? What make, model, etc.

there's no information on the model, but startx says that "mach64" no module found. Lemme show you what happens when it's set for mach64.

No, it's not an error:

Can you try removing the Modes section and the Modes0 line from the monitor section, disable DPMS and change the HorizSync to 31.5 and the VertRefresh to 67.

I think your monitor might be a color plus 14" display.
