I get this when I try and merge at76c503a:

It's a 2.6.19 kernel thing. That file is gone from the kernel tree now, and for a long time all it did was include autoconf.h as a concession to backward compatibility. See this bug for your particular package:
Add 2.6.19 kernel support to net-wireless/at76c503a

Yeah, usually the patches on bugzilla haven't gotten into the tree yet, so you end up having to either apply them manually each time you build a package, or modify the ebuild and keep it under /usr/local/portage. If you're lucky, the person who submits the patch will also provide a modified ebuild or a patch to that ebuild.
