Excuse the mess of this thread. I'm sorta using it as my to do list as well, so i'm making a lot of edits. thanks for all the help, y'all. Since i have so many questions i'mm going to put a little summary of what's going on for each one right here.
Quote:

1) How do i make my touchpad scroll on the right edge. I looked online and added Option "VertEdgeScroll" "on" and Option "VertScrollDelta" "20" to the mouse portion of xorg.conf. It didn't do anything. Also, i don't
know what kind of touchpad i have. Do i need to know that, and if so how do i figure it out? I tried using the synapsis driver, but there was no change. I followed this wiki:http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Synaptics_Touchpad. I'll post xorg.conf if y'all want. Can i post it as an attachment on the forum?

2) Can I make a touchpad corner right click?

3) How do I remap keys. I want to turn Caps Lock off (or into Control), enter into Control, and Right Apple into alt.
if i run
Code:
xmodmap -e "keycode 108 = Control_L"
where my enter key is 108, it should become control, but it doesn't. Now i'm stumped.

4) Is there a way to make fluxbox's application menu come up on left click?

5) My computer clock isn't recognizing daylight savings time. How do I enable that?

6) My battery died and the computer wouldn't boot because init.d/clock wouldn't start. I had to boot into osx and let it fix the clock. How do i do that in linux?

7) I am running pbbuttonsd and having a heck of a time. Is there and good documentation for it anywhere?
8) I can connect to my wireless router only if i manually use iwconfig to set the essid (i have broadcast turned off for obvious reasons). How do i get it to automatically connect to the right essid? do i add a line in conf.d/net? the example file was too confusing.

if i added
Code:

iwconfig eth1 essid "*****"

to /etc/inid.d/net.eth1, first would it work, and second, is there a more elegant way to fix this

also, i can't get net.eth0 to not try and start on boot, even though it's not listed in any runlevel it did say something about
Code:

device initiated services : net.eth0

maybe that helps. net.eth0 showed up in bright blue. this happened during boot right before entering runlevel 3

START ORIGINAL THREAD
After not having touched a gentoo system since 2004, i decided to put gentoo on my aging powerbook that's been running slow recently. Everything worked smooth, no problems in the install. I've got firefox and e16 working great, though i think i may use fluxbox instead. All i use this thing for is email and web.

I do have a couple simple(i think) questions, so i'll combine them into one thread.

1) How do i make my touchpad scroll on the right edge. I looked online and added Option "VertEdgeScroll" "on" and Option "VertScrollDelta" "20" to the mouse portion of xorg.conf. It didn't do anything. Also, i don't know what kind of touchpad i have. Do i need to know that, and if so how do i figure it out?

2)Can i make a corner of the touchpad act as rt.click?

3)is gAIM still the best AIM client for linux?

4)What is everyone using for email these days? I just want something simple, sorta along the lines of apple's mail program. It did everything i needed.

5)What do i need to do to optimize for battery life? Is that laptop-oriented kernel patchset still around? I forgot what it was called.

6)Is there a way to copy/paste between console programs? I've been using eterm and i don't see any copy/paste options.

More to come i'm sure

Anyway, i'm glad to see that my favorite distro is still great. The wiki is cool, and i appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Jeff

One more
7) Can i make my right enter button into a control button instead?

8) Can i make the fluxbox menu come up when i left click?

9) What do i need to to do get the computer to recognize daylight savings time. it's stuck in standard right now.

3)is gAIM still the best AIM client for Linux?

I think it is still the best all around client, but I don't IM much

4)What is everyone using for email these days? I just want something simple, sorta along the lines of apple's mail program. It did everything i needed.

I hear Thunderbird is good, I just use evolution though.

5)What do i need to do to optimize for battery life? Is that laptop-oriented kernel patchset still around? I forgot what it was called.

have a look at the Power Management Guide it really helped on my old XPS, and I plan on using in my new latitude.

6)Is there a way to copy/paste between console programs? I've been using eterm and i don't see any copy/paste options.

If i remember correctly in eterm you can highlight the text and use the mouse scroll button to paste.

Opinions on that may vary, but I think: yes (although mICQ does a pretty nice job as well, although from the shell)

I use Thunderbird or KMail and am quite content

I'm not sure what the status is with powerbook, but on my thinkpad, I use laptop-mode to change CPU governors and modify hd sleep times when on battery. I don't think you need a specific patchset anymore...

You can paste marked text via the middle mouse button nearly everywhere in X (and also on a VT using GPM), although your mileage may vary on the more new, shiny stuff like KDE

I used to do such stuff by hacking around in the keymaps in /usr/share/X11/xkbm , although there may be a cleaner way to do that

Well, i'm going to go with gAIM and tbird. I had totally forgotten about the middle click paste. I'm still working on some of the others. And i have a new question.

10)I am trying to use pbbuttonsd. it starts, but it does give me this error
Code:

ERROR: Can't attach card 'default': No such device

however, it says it is started. I'm not sure where any cards are involved, so that might not be an issue. The problem is that when i hit one of those keys, it still acts like the function key, not the hotkey. I noticed that pbbuttonsd has some powersaving features, too, so that might solve my earlier question.

btw, if i should create separate threads for each of these problems, i will. I just figured since they are so little i won't flood the forum with my posts.

Thanks!

Ok, so the error seems to come from not having my sound configured correctly. I haven't even looked at sound yet. So i guess that the error has nothing to do with why the other stuff doesn't work.

i looked in /usr/share/X11/xkbm/keycodes/macintosh

the keymaps in that file aren't the same ones i get from xev, and i'm afraid i'll break something it i try to changes things. i also want to turn off my caps lock and i tried to do that following some instructions i found on the internet to make that change using xmodmap and it really messed things up(no lowercase and not all keys worked). I was able to delete .Xmodmap and reboot and it was ok, but i don't have the listing i used.

I can't really remember which file I modified, I think it was keycodes/xfree86 , but this of course depends on your keyboard settings (and, frankly, I never really understood how those work). I simply swapped and changed the numbers associated with certain keys, which worked fine. If you backup all files you modify before, you shouldn't be ably to seriously mess up anything, and if all is lost, you still could reemerge Xorg... :)

There are two ways to stop the network device starting on boot. I would just install ifplugd, which will then autodetect if you ever plug in a network cable, making it not matter really. Another option is to disable the auto startup of hotplugged network devices. Edit /etc/conf.d/rc and change RC_PLUG_SERVICES to "!net.*".

You should look at the wireless.example instead of the net example for setting up your wireless card. Why would you turn off the broadcast of SSID? It's not a security measure, your network is still easily detectable.
