What are the contents of the /proc/asound directory?
Does /proc/asound/SoundByLayout/pcm0p exist?

Sorry, but you didn't really answer my question.

What files are in /proc/asound? (NOT THE CONTENTS)
I see that the pcm device does in fact exist, so that's good, the device is created.

Well, everything appears to be working fine. Can you please post your whole kernel config somewhere? (On the web, not in this thread please). I've got a PB 1.67GHz machine and it works fine, so I'm not sure what trouble you're having.

http://dev.gentoo.org/~josejx/PB.config

I don't see anything immediately wrong, but try that.

i recompiled 2.6.21 using your config: the sound is not working, as it is not working with my .config
so we understand the problem is elsewhere

i rebooted the machine with "iteractive boot"
i stopped the init.d/* and i see "aplay -l" is reporting the soundcard
good, but what does it mean ?
what should be wrong in the init.d/* ?

Well my guess would be the alsa startup script or the module aliases. What files do you have in /etc/modprobe.d? Did you change anything here? Or anything else related to sound?

no

i invoked alsaconfig, that detected no soundcard

i changed /etc/conf.d/rc RC_DEVICES="static"
and nothing else

have you modified
/etc/modprobe.conf ?
/etc/modules.conf ?

It will not, the sound card is attached to the i2c bus, which is not scanned by alsaconfig.

Oh. Perhaps you don't have a sequencer device then? Why did you do that? Let it dynamically assign the devices and see if it works again.

No.

i changed back /etc/conf.d/rc RC_DEVICES="auto"
and the sound is now working ... good !

about the 2007.0, i re-emerge python and perl, and the issue in "emerge --update world" has been fixed
i also emerged gcc-4-1-2 enabling objC, altivec, and ... i'd like java support, but it is not working, i don't know why. All rest is ok.

when will the 2007.1 be released ?
regards

Okay, glad that fixed it. Did you run revdep-rebuild yet to fix the expat issue? Your post doesn't specify that you did. I can't help you at all for the java error without more context, perhaps file a bug with the appropriate info or start a new thread.

2007.1 is still in the planning stages.
