okay, i've managed to make it boot 2006.0 - that's great. now i have a few problems:

i want to use this machine as a mostly console based wireless thing to carry around and play with.

1. can't switch virtual consoles! perhaps it's the keyboard - this one was bought in the netherlands. the keyboard has a weird and annoying elongated enter key, and a really short left shift key. does that help, description wise?

2. links keeps segfaulting, and i get a bad feeling from this. combined with no virtual consoles, i don't like it one bit since i have to use another computer to look at the install guide.

i have another wallstreet, but it won't start unless it's plugged in (tried several batteries and reset the PMU, no luck), plus it's a bit slower, so i haven't gone to the trouble of setting it up with bootx yet.

any ideas?

do you mean to say that you can't switch consoles with either the ctrl-alt-F(1-6) combinations or the ctrl-alt-fn-F(1-6) combinations?
i have to ask because some keymaps have the F-keys mapped to keycodes beyond 104 and the fn-F-key combinations to the F1-F12 keys.
(by 'fn', i mean the key in the left-down corner on normal apple keypads/keyboards.)

krishnasobhanbhaskar's suggestion is good, try pressing the fn key along with ctrl-alt-fX.

As for links segfaulting, make sure you have enough free memory (the InstallCD uses quite a lot for the ramdisk) and that your memory isn't bad (memtester).
