I've created a music/movies partition on my iBook so I can have my files whether I'm in OSX or Gentoo. It's an msdos partition, which I mount with a simple `mnt -t msdos /dev/hda5 /mnt/share`. The problem is: the file names are the "long" type if viewed in OSX, but they're truncated in Gentoo. ie:

OSX: "/mnt/sounds/The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead/"
Gentoo: "/mnt/share/sounds/thesmi~1"

I have my codepage/charset as 437/8859-1, if that's any help.

why msdos? I think vfat is better, but probably all you need to do is read man mount carefully, particularly vfat's shortname option

As Pseudonimo alluded to, try using `-t vfat` rather than `-t msdos`:

Code:
# mount -t vfat /dev/hda5 /mnt/share

Also, keep in mind that Linux can read and write HFS+ (what Apple's Disk Utility calls Mac OS Extended) partitions just fine; you don't have to use FAT32/VFAT/MS-DOS like when sharing a system with Windows. You might need to check to verify that you have support enabled in your kernel. If it is, you can use `-t hfsplus` to mount HFS+ partitions.
