I've installed Gentoo on x86 and amd64, many times. I'm comfortable with installing Gentoo. This is my first try on PPC. I can't get anything to emerge. Portage, dhcpcd, yaboot, vim, all the same error. emerge --sync completes successfully.

Code:
livecd / # emerge portage

I've tried changing CFLAGS, same result.

Well for a start a capital -O2 is needed not a lowercase O. But that won't affect portage straight off, it will make gcc complain later on.

Try doing a manual reinstall of portage, it may be something in the original installation wasn't installed correctly, or has been damaged.

I was trying to install Gentoo on an Apple at work for a personal Linux desktop. A spare Dell OptiPlex GX 260 became available so I through the Apple back on the pile. The Dell ran like a champ for about six months then dropped the hard drive. Grabbed a spare 40GB and reinstalled no problem. Now that the boss has upgraded his Windoze desktop I'm getting his old one and it will become my new and improved Gentoo desktop.

Optiplex 745 (large case)
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz
1GB RAM
SATA 80GB HDD
CDRW/DVDRW

I've installed Gentoo on a number of small form factor 745 and I'm waiting for 2008.0 to be released.
