Hi,

I succesfully installed Gentoo ppc64 32ul on my playstation 3..
KDE is working and i installed mozilla firefox, and other software i "need".

Now I need flash / java ... But unfortunatly they are not available for ppc. Now i did install Gnash, but i can't watch movies using Gnash on youtube. So, how do i get some decent java/flash on my ps3.. Otherwise, what's the use ?

thanks,

puntjuh

Maybe you could use it to play video games.

Ok, more seriously, you might be able to set up swfdec. Check the gentoo bugzilla to see if anyone has submitted an ebuild for it. As to java, I don't know.

Last time I tried I wasn't able to watch youtube videos with gnash, too. Although java *is* available on ppc/ppc64! just do this:

Code:

$ emerge ibm-jdk-bin

or if you want JRE (Java runtime environment) only replace the 'jdk' with 'jre'.

regards,

-corsair, who is happy without flash :roll:

Hiya, i set up gnash but it won't do youtube, youtube keeps looping in : Share / Play again. Swfdec, does the same.

I tried "emerge ibm-jre-bin" but it has fetch restrictions turned on. So i registered at ibm.com to get it, but now my application to get it is beeing reviewed.

this is what i get:

Code:
>>> Emerging (1 of 1) dev-java/ibm-jre-bin-1.4.2.7 to /

!!! dev-java/ibm-jre-bin-1.4.2.7 has fetch restriction turned on.
!!! This probably means that this ebuild's files must be downloaded
!!! manually.  See the comments in the ebuild for more information.

 * Due to license restrictions, we cannot redistribute or fetch the distfiles
 * Please visit: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/linux/download.html
 * Under Java 1.4.2, download SR7 for your arch:
 * IBMJava2-142-ppc32-JRE-1.4.2-7.0.ppc.rpm
 * Direct link:
 * https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/web/preLogin.do?source=lxdk&S_PKG=ip32142sr7&cp=UTF-8&S_TACT=105AGX05&S_CMP=JDK
 * Place the file(s) in: /usr/portage/distfiles
 * Then restart emerge: 'emerge --resume'
 * Note: if SR7 is not available at http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/linux/download.html
 * it may have been moved to http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/linux/older_download.html. Lately that page
 * isn't updated, but the files should still available through the
 * direct link. If it doesn't work, file a bug.

You don't need gnash to view flash movies. mplayer (among others) can play those files.

ok, well , but i've got swfdec "working"

This is the deal:

I start youtube, go to a movie, and then i start play. It doesn't work.. I keep trying until firefox crashes, i restore the session and then it DOES work.

Weird stuff.

Anyone got any ideas?

I use youtube-dl to download the files and mplayer to play them. Much more convenient than crashing firefox :wink:

win32codecs on a powerpc machine is pointless as they only run on x86 architectures...

IBM offers Java packages for their own 32 and 64-bit iSeries/pSeries machines, which will work fine on any PPC hardware.
