I just noticed that I got caught pents down with this issue. I have been running 64bit Ubuntu for
awhile and there are some tricks to do stuff - forced install etc. and minding that right libs are
copied to /lib32 - usually need to get the right 32bit .deb containing a needed lib, extract and copy
it to the /lib32.

Now gentoo, what am I supposed to do? Everything is compiled so when I get 32bit apps - binaries
for a game or something and it misses 32bit libs - how do I manage?

Moved from Portage & Programming to Gentoo on AMD64.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-amd64-faq.xml#multilib

Gentoo has emul libraries for /lib32 stuff, otherwise use a 32bit chroot (linked in the page I posted)

What does that mean and more over what is this multilib? Is it that for every 64bit lib it will also compile
a 32bit lib automatically or what? I had also chroot in Ubuntu initially but then I found out it was sufficiently
easy without one - for the couple of haphazard applications I need in 32bit so I'd like to avoid that here as well.

I don't have and amd64 so I mightn't be quite correct but...

multilib means that your system has been built with support for both x86_64 and x86 programs. Assuming you choose the multilib enabled profile when you install Gentoo, 32bit applications should 'just work'.
