This may be a dumb question, but I really stink at configuring xorg: I had glx disabled for a long time because it was giving me headaches when I tried to configure. Now I need it for something I installed, but whenever I uncomment the line

Load "glx"

in my xorg.conf, the X server dies with a message about "aiglx: module dri not loaded." Now I know that I can't use aiglx with the generic nv drivers, but I thought I could use glx (I seem to remember that it used to work some time ago). Is aiglx the default extension in the latest versions of xorg (I'm running 7.2)? And can I somehow disable it to have "normal" glx loaded?

Thanks!

I have an iMac G4 with a nvidia card and I use the nv driver.
For me glx works.
I don't use the module provided by the kernel but x11-drm + libdrm
and the latest (2.0.2) xf86-video-nv driver. I also have (mostly) xorg 7.2
[I discovered when 7.2 was made stable on x86 that there were many more
packages than the one pulled by =x11-base/xorg-x11-7.2 that were stabilized - I have
been running "7.2" on both x86 and ppc for a while now.] Also if you changed
kernel recently there is a number of things to recompile that are not caught
by revdep-rebuild. x11-drm for one. and then run update-modules.

I don't know much about the bowels of the Xorg OpenGL subsystem, but getting 3D acceleration to work has nothing to do with the AIGLX extension. AFAIK, there is no 3D acceleration whatsoever in the Xorg nv driver as of now, although the nouveau project aims at providing this...

To be clear when I say glx works. It is not hardware accelerated but software
emulated but you can load the extension and use it in apps. Which I presumed
is what Pindar wants.

I got 55 FPS with glxgears (while recompiling glibc at the same time so it probably
can be better) not earth shattering but it kind of works.

About nouveau, I haven't tried it yet but the latest x11-drm install both a nv module
and a nouveau module for the braves 8) .

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll only be able to boot into my gentoo system tomorrow, but yes: software emulation is all I want; it's just for one single application that insists on having glx available. I'll report back as soon as I have tried the things suggested by fb!

Again, thanks! I emerged x11-drm, and now I get emulated glx support (323 fps in glxgears). This was for just one application, stellarium. It runs, even if it's a bit slow and jerky, but my kids still love it!
