Hi all,

Firstly, I now have a very sweet PS3 freevo setup now, which auto boots in and shuts down nicely, which can play just about any video file along with a slew of MAME ROMs. Even my wife can use the damn thing now :) Gentoo sure has beaten the pants off the other Linux distros I have tried!

Anyway, I am working on rounding off some of the rough edges of the install which are a) no splash screen and b) no bluetooth remote support. I want to start working on a) and have taken a look at the relevant howto for gensplash here: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_fbsplash. I am currently running the 2.6.16-ps3 kernel with wifi built-in and I have checked what gentoo-sources an emerge would get me to which it indicates it will be 2.6.20-r5. The question I have is this the way to go about grabbing the right kernel sources for the PS3 (ie. I don't want to lose the WIFI!)? Do I follow the normal process of building a new kernel (in order to add the gensplash support) or are there any special exceptions or gotchas that I need to heed?

And lasttly, is there a quick and easy way I can check to determine that the current kernel doesn't already have gensplash support compiled into it?? I doubt it's the case but my laziness prompted me to ask.

Thanks!

Moved from Gentoo on Alternative Architectures to Gentoo on PPC.

I've been thinking about investigating similarly as well. I am aware of a couple of issues for sure. The kernel that ships with the stage4s is a heavily patched vanilla kernel tree. I know nothing splash-related has been patched in, so that would be required first.

JoseX, do you guys have splash working for ppc32? Any tips?

As far as I know you don't need anything in the kernel other than a framebuffer driver. Splashutils is userland stuff. And unfortunately a bit broken on ppc at the moment :)
