Hi,

can you install Gentoo (or another distribution, if you have recommendations) on a Playstation 3 with only a regular, old TV?

I plan to SSH into it from my laptop to try programming for Cell, so I'd rather not buy a HDTV at this point.

... and I would still not have anything to hook it into  I only have laptops, but I appreciate the tip.

I assume that doesn't mean you've tried without?

It will work on a regular TV, but it's a bit hard to read.

Its usually suggested to install on an HDTV and then setup an ssh server so you can login. I was able to successfully do that with Fedora 7.

Perhaps, but when there is no HDTV in sight...

Anyway, Ubuntu worked very nicely, even getting X up on a regular TV. Yellow Dog doesn't do that, but the text install did just what I needed and for SDK 2.0 it worked great.

I'm going to have to give Fedora Core 6 another shot though, SDK 2.1 has some issues with Fedora 7. Not sure whether they can be worked around, but it's complicated enough as it is.

Fedora 6 was a pain to install. I forgot the guide I used(you can google for it) but basically you download another CD which boots the "installer" it asks you if you want to do a full install(everything including servers like apache, mail, etc) or minimum(basically nothing). For me once I added petitboot(think GUI kboot, its nicer then grub) and I put the CD it petitboot recognized it and I installed. Now Fedora 7 does suggest using an HDTV to get there GUI installer to work, since I was able to use one it worked out very well. Once the installed finished I updated then I download the Cell 2.1 SDK from IBM mounted the image and just did ./cellsdk depend(this downloads extra packages) and ./cellsdk install --nosim(installs the sdk, you don't need the simulator for Cell you have one) and I had the CellSDK installed. I'm using it right now. The two issues I've ran into is that spulets don't work, this can be fixed by installing the rpm from bsc titled elfspe2-2.1.0. I also found that Cell apps cause a kernel panic under 2.6.22. I havn't had the time to trace it down and I am going away this weekend but I will look into it more when I get back. I tried getting the Cell 2.1 on YellowDog and I couldn't get it to installed. I started running into rpm hell so I just said screw it and went to Fedora since it is the official Cell distro.

Thanks for the tips :)

I think I still have to use FC6 anyway, as much as I dread it. Some of the software I write may eventually end up on IBM blades running FC6, and I won't have much of chance to fiddle with the library versions etc. once it gets that far.

One day it'll run Gentoo though.

we're still doing testing to see if the Cell is the best so we only have two PS3s right now, we're also looking at multicore CPUs and NVIDIA GPU processing(CUDA). Its fun to get to play with all this expansive, powerful equipment. Anyway Fedora does work very nice with the PS3 I just switched to F7 because it has really good PS3 support(its like your installing on an x86 machine) and only had FC6 on one system so it wasn't a big deal to upgrade for me. Also any distro you run will run slow mainly because it only has 256MB of RAM it does get annoying at times so I just init 3 to save on memory.
