Greetings.
I'm experienced with Linux on x86 and am trying to move to PowerPC.
I've reached a hang up in the installation and am seeking aid in solving it.

The target computer is a G4 Power Mac.
All parts are from Apple except the ATA hard drive.
The computer is (I hope) destined to be a Gentoo-only system.

I'm installing from the
livecd-ppc-installer-2007.0.iso
. A checksum of the burned CD shows it's fine.

The install is networkless .

In the GUI installation,
after the selection of "Network Mounts"
it presents a pop-up window titled,
"Installation Progress"
with content text,
"Step: Step description here"
and a progress bar which remains still at no progress.

The text installation shows a window titled,
"Installation progress"
with content text,
"Installation Started!"
and where a profress bar would be
"The setup program seems to have failed"

ps(tree) shows that the installer started gtkfe.py, which has no children.
The CPU is idle. I see no processes which are having problems.
The syslog reports nothing I can identify as hindering the install.

This happens regardless of whether I
take the recommended or manual partitioning in the gui or use mac-fdisk.
I can format and mount the root partition at the command line fine.

Alternatively, I followed the process described in the handbook
until it would have me extract a stage archive,
but I find none.

It's difficult for me to download another (different) install CD,
so I'm hoping to be able to do any work around the problem and proceed with the installation using this (live) CD.

If you have recommendations on how to identify or work around the problem,
please post.

Thank you.

This would make me worry if my media was correctly created.
I have no other idea at hand.

If you mean that the media was incorrectly burned,
that would result in a different MD5 checksum of the disk,
which would not match the checksum in
livecd-ppc-installer-2007.0.iso.DIGESTS
. Since my disk does match, it indicates it is identical to the official Gentoo source copy.

Unfortunately, the livecd installer isn't really supported on PPC yet. You'd be better off downloading the Universal install CD and the packages disc, both of which are recommended for a networkless install.
