I am trying to upgrade gcc from 3.4.4 to 4.1.2 according to the guide at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml
Everything worked well until I did a
Code:
emerge --oneshot sys-libs/libstdc++-v3
as suggested in the guide.

This fails with the following (only last few lines):
Code:

The same errors occur when compiling ncurses (part of an emerge -ave system)

I checked for the libintl errors, but I am at a loss what is causing this. Any help highly appreciated

Can you post the output of "emerge --info" please?

It looks like your install fails in the test before the merge proper. This is very strange.
I am not sure why the test should be done. It is very likely that you have in fact a proper
libintl but built with gcc 3.4 or over which could be uncompatible. I don't know what trigger
the test suite, usually it is left alone in most ebuild.

Hi fb, I got it to compile, though that didn't help with the emerge -e system...

Here is what fixed libstdc++-v3:
Code:
emerge glibc
emerge libintl
emerge --oneshot sys-libs/libstdc++-v3

Note that this was the second 'emerge glibc' without any change to compiler or packages.

I still get the error with ncurses on emerge -e system:
Code:

Those are the same errors as above with libstdc++-v3.
Ideas?

Try running revdep-rebuild

Rebuild gcc-4.1.2 and try emerging ncurse again. The libstdc++.so in question should
come from there. toolchain gcc/glibc/binutils can be fussy at times.

That was sort-of-the-right-approach. Just rebuilding gcc and ncurses wasn't enough, ncurses always failed after gcc was emerged. The trick was to re-emerge linux-headers and glibc as well.

After that I did a emerge -e system && emerge -e world, now it can't find 'fsck' on boot. (It is missing, however fsck.reiser etc. are there...)

Gentoo on PPC seems pretty broken...

Perhaps you should try running the missing fsck tool to see if there are any unresolved dependencies.

Where would I find the 'missing fsck tool'? As said, there is no /sbin/fsck on the server.

Sorry, that wasn't very clear from your previous post, I thought you were referring to an error message, not the binary. You can re-emerge it, but you should check your filesystem for corruption, that's really not normal. You can do this easily with the minimal install CD. If that's all that's missing, you can re-install it by emerging e2fsprogs again.
