Plop everyone,

Last week, i finally decided to have gentoo installed on my (dearest) powerbook (you'll find more details about it later), i got the handbook, the gentoo-wiki and some other guides as it was going to be my first real experience with Linux. I sticked to the handbook and everything was okay, except for the keymap, i tried them all and, still, couldn't find the one that suits my keyboard (i'll put a link for a picture of it at the end of this post). For example, i couldn't have the @, nor #, nor | (this one was quite annoying, hopefully someguy made me a script that putted a pipe for me with simple instructions) nor all the keys i can have on Mac OS with ALT+SHIFT+KEY ... However, i was able to continue by changing the keymap everytime i needed some character (yeah, really ...). After the basic configurations and everything, i emerged X.org and then Openbox as my window manager. I used xorgcfg -textmode (or something similar to that) to configure X.Org, and everything seemed to be fine, except for the keyboard. I couldn't find the right layout, nor the right keymap, etc etc... And it got worse than how it was outside X. I asked for some help on the gentoo-ppc help channel on freenode, and some guy told me that i will need to tune it myself. I searched for how to do it, and i found some example here. This wasn't my keyboard though, it was just to see how it should be done. I think i understood the principals of HOW to do that, but i didn't get WHERE to do it and that's quite annoying. Also, i don't know where to get the "labels" or whatever they are called (like : plus, bar onesuperior, etc .. I couldn't find a list for them). I discovered aso the xev utility that can show me what the character really should be like, the keycode of the key, its hexadecimal reference etc etc.. Quite interesting data on each key (but not the character name, that's why a list would be useful). Also, i would like to know how to get the special characters I could get on Mac OS with ALT+Key or ALT+SHIFT+Key ...

Lately, i discovered another quite annoying thing : when i used the showkey command (that shows the keycode on any pressed key), i looked like i had some key permanently pressed as the terminal kept getting down forever. However, after 10 seconds, the showkey command stopped (it stops after 10seconds while no key is pressed) but the shell line continued down like i was pressing on Enter or Down-Arrow, and it wouldn't stop, even if i quit that terminal. Also, after doing the showkey thing (with terminal opened or closed), when I right-click to have Openbox menu, and when i point my mouse to something, it clicks by itself (haunted box ? i don't think so ... for the moment)

These are the two "major" problems i'm having now(they are really annoying, more than having a box that doesn't boot...), i hope there will be someone to help me out, I will be hugely grateful.

Most important details about my box : (for more details, go here and look to the 12-inch Superdrive)
*)Model : M9184LL/A
*)Processor : 1,33GHz Pow768erPC G4
*)Memory : 768MB PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM
*)Display : 12,1-inch, 1024 x 768 resolution, TFT
*)Graphics : NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 with 64MB of DDR SDRAM

Details about the system i'm running : Gentoo installed with the most recent portage and stage-3, using the 2.6.20-gentoo-r5 Linux kernel

My naughty keyboard : http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snv10091kf1.jpg

My apologies if this post was too long to read, i just wanted to put all the details I could possibly give, and I hope you will be able to help me out :)

Thanks

I found lot of help here: http://www.linux-france.org/macintosh .
The console keymap is perfect but unfortunately for X.Org I did not manage to have a correct keymap.

hi, if you want a french keymap, maybe you can try the one i'm currently using.
I can't remember where i found it, but im using it with XOrg 7 without problem.
it has nearly the same mapping as Mac Os so, maybe it can be usefull for you
