I am rather new to the world of Apple hardware. I recently purchased what I believe is a Graphite G4 tower (it is a G4, I already have Gentoo on it, etc). What I was wondering is this: There is a PCMCIA slot on the mainboard itself. There are also two wires sitting next to it (the antenna for the "Apple Wireless" card. Can this slot be used for another card (say, a Netgear WG511 that I found in one of my "junk" boxes that I already know works 'cause I tested it on one of my laptops)? When I do an "lspci", no PCMCIA slots show up in the list.

Any insight would be helpful. If you need any identification marks from the machine (in case it really isn't a Graphite -- as I said, I'm new to this hardware), feel free to ask. :)

Thanks in advance!

Mike

I don't think you are seeing a PCMCIA slot in there. Looking at the model list on lowendmac.com I haven't found a PowerMac G4 that has PCMCIA. I would have been surprised. PowerMacs (and PowerBooks) have a proprietary slot, which can only be used for Apples own wireless cards (or that is to say: I haven't seen other cards for that slot). So I do think what you are seeing is such a slot.

If you want wireless with your PowerMac you have to buy a Apple Airport (or Airport Extreme?) card. Don't try to use your netgear card. As far as I know this will cause damage.

That's the Airport slot. The connector is the same as PCMCIA, but it doesn't follow the PCMCIA standard AFAIK. I don't think you can put anything else than the proper Airport card in it (this card, not the newer Airport Extreme one). Finding one might be a problem nowadays (you can find them on eBay, but they're expensive), and it can only do 802.11b.

It won't work. Even if the slot was PCMCIA, it probably wouldn't support a Cardbus card (and it might damage the card and possibly the motherboard).
