Well, a couple questions here. I'm on a G4 Aluminum 15" Powerbook, running linux-2.6.22.1. Seemingly out of nowhere (although it was probably my fault), my sound playing apps are completely locking up and forcing me to kill them. I can't tell any pattern in the lockups, other than that they are very frequent. Here's my kernel config for the relevant sections:
Code:

#
# Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=y

#
# Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
#
CONFIG_SND=y
CONFIG_SND_TIMER=y
CONFIG_SND_PCM=y
CONFIG_SND_HWDEP=m
CONFIG_SND_RAWMIDI=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQ_DUMMY=m
CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL=y
CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS_PLUGINS=y
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS=y
# CONFIG_SND_DYNAMIC_MINORS is not set
CONFIG_SND_SUPPORT_OLD_API=y
CONFIG_SND_VERBOSE_PROCFS=y
# CONFIG_SND_VERBOSE_PRINTK is not set
# CONFIG_SND_DEBUG is not set

#
# Generic devices
#
CONFIG_SND_DUMMY=m

#
# Apple Onboard Audio driver
#
CONFIG_SND_AOA=y
CONFIG_SND_AOA_FABRIC_LAYOUT=y
CONFIG_SND_AOA_ONYX=y
# CONFIG_SND_AOA_TAS is not set
# CONFIG_SND_AOA_TOONIE is not set
CONFIG_SND_AOA_SOUNDBUS=y
CONFIG_SND_AOA_SOUNDBUS_I2S=y

I've never been sure what the "best" method of enabling alsa on PPC is, so I just statically compiled it all in. Insight into the best way to do alsa would be nice too :) Oh, and whenever I restart /etc/init.d/alsasound this is what I get:
Code:

<jeremy@ambelina:~>% sudo /etc/init.d/alsasound restart           (07-26 22:28)
 * Stopping Music Player Daemon ...                                       [ ok ]
 * Storing ALSA Mixer Levels ...                                          [ ok ]
 * Killing processes using ALSA ...                                       [ ok ]
 * Unloading ALSA modules ...                                             [ ok ]
 * Loading ALSA modules ...
 *   Loading: snd-card-0 ...
FATAL: Module snd_powermac not found.                                     [ !! ]
 *   Loading: snd-seq-oss ...                                             [ ok ]
 *   Loading: snd-pcm-oss ...                                             [ ok ]
 * Restoring Mixer Levels ...                                             [ ok ]
 * Starting Music Player Daemon ...                                       [ ok ]

Obviously the powermac module isn't compiled (or desired), but I'm unsure how to stop alsa from trying to load it. And here's some output from the mpd error log to show what seems to be the problem:
Code:

<jeremy@ambelina:/usr/src/linux-2.6.22.1>% cat /var/log/mpd.error.log                                                                                                                                                            (07-26 22:30)

Any ideas on how to resolve this extremely troubling issue? Thank you in advance...

I'm gonna be a dork and reply to my own message. I closed out of pidgin and all of a sudden mpd started playing. I have pidgin set to use alsa for sound though... It's strange that it still locked my sound card. I would still love to know the "recommended" way to handle the alsa modules and stuff though. :)

as a side note :

Quote:
FATAL: Module snd_powermac not found.

this happened to me too and we have the same lappy so just grep for powermac in /etc and you´ll see you have it aliased for snd-card-0 ;)

cheers

if your problem is software mixing triple-check the dmix setup section from the wiki.

cheers
