I have an OldWorld Power Mac G3 beige desktop with a 300MHz processor with 1MB Cache, 64MB RAM SDRAM, 6GB hard drive, a 24x CD-ROM drive and an Iomega Zip-drive just sitting around. I would like to use it as either a home file server or a web server. I have installed and used Gentoo on x86 machines before, but never PPC.

My problem is that the Mac OS installation is corrupted, and to top it all off, the recovery disk was lost in a flood. Without Mac OS installed, there is no way to use BootX to boot Gentoo.

My question is, what are my options?

Are there any other boot loaders I would be able to use without an operating system already installed?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Debian has floppy disks that work sometimes, you might be able to get it booting that way. Apple also provides an old version of OS7.5 for free, which may or may not work on your machine (it may be too new).

Would you happen to know where I can find the files for these floppies?

I know of the free download of System 7; however, even if it were to install on the G3, BootX requires OS 8 or later in order to run.

Thanks for the information.

As far as I know, you can use System 7 for BootX, you might need to use one of the older revisions though.
I'm not sure where the debian floppies are located now, a search should find them, but I'm not sure how recent they are.

I'm pretty sure now that System 7 will not run on anything except pre-G3 machines, so I am going to try the floppies and post when I know more.

Thanks for all of your help.

Okay, everything is looking great.

Now my next question is, what do you think would be the best way to shrink the OS 8 partition? I have tried using parted but to no avail.

Thanks.

I am still getting errors while trying to resize the OS 8 partition.

Anyone have any ideas?
